If you gave your child the single vaccines would you consider giving them the MMR booster?

I think ds is due his MMR booster shortly as he is nearly 4. We gave him the singles because we have a family history of crohns disease and I wanted to be on the safe side not sure what to do about the booster though. Any thoughts?

good question; the clinic that did the single vaccines for my dd said the booster wouldn't be necessary. Not sure I believe that tho'. I wouldn't go down the booster route however.

reethi96 · 08/07/2008 17:33

Oh thats interesting wheelsonthebus. Our clinic said he would need a blood test to check his immunity but the blood test is quite expensive and I can't really afford to pay for the blood test and then the possibility of single vaccines.

I gave DS MMR as booster after having sepvax ... I was more confident with his health, gastric system and size .. HTH

Hecate · 08/07/2008 17:37

I gave mine the singles because
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I was worried about the MMR-Autism thing

And then they both got diagnosed with autism, so when it came time to get boosters they just had the MMR.

Walkthedinosaur · 08/07/2008 17:38

Both my DS' had single vaccines at 12 months onwards, DS1 had combined booster at 4.5 as will DS2 when he gets to that age. One of my reasons for the single vaccines was that I believed that their little bodies were too small to cope with the combined MMR but at 4.5 they were bigger and therefore more able to deal with it.

Incidentally the doctor that gave my single vaccines when they were babies encouraged me to go for the combined booster at 4. She said any signs of autism would have materialised and that their bodies would be big enough to deal with the vaccination itself. She did emphasise the need for a booster though.

Thanks Twiglett. I have just had a look on the clinic website and they advise giving the Rubella booster to teenage girls but it doesn't mention the others as being necessary.

IMO if you give the full booster why bother doing the singles earlier.

Singles for us and no booster.

reethi96 · 08/07/2008 17:48

Thanks everyone. I think I may go for the combined booster, will discuss it with dh.

Yep I did singles for the first one and combined booster. Same as dinosaur I figured they were big enough to deal with the combined booster.

Surgery we attended for DC1 recommended a blood test before boosters but by time DC2 had his done had changed that to "just have the boosters because not many places are offering the blood test and it can be distressing for the child"

reethi96 · 08/07/2008 17:50

Iati, for the same reasons as walkthedinosaur & Twiglett. I had read enough to give me doubts about the MMR at 13 months but as yet I have not read anything that gives me the same concerns when giving the MMR to an older child.

I'm trying to decide what to do about this too. DSs are 4 and nearly 6 and had the singles as babies.

Twiglett · 08/07/2008 17:51

1 dose does not necessarily confer immunity .. you are supposed to give 2 doses of sepvax as well AFAIK .. even having an immunity blood test isn't supposed to be accurate for some reason (that I don't remember)

Hecate · 08/07/2008 17:56

Iati - As I said earlier - no MMR because of autism fears. Kids autistic. Seemed pointless to not do MMR booster, really.

itati · 08/07/2008 18:02

I posted before I had read everything, I wasn't challenging anyone's decision. Just curious.

Hecate · 08/07/2008 18:02

iati? iTati, obviously! Sorry m'dear

itati · 08/07/2008 18:25

That's okay. I knew you meant me.

belcantavinissima · 08/07/2008 18:35

singles for us, no boosters. and like hecate, 2 of them have since been diagnosed autistic (poss 3rd too but we are 'waiting and seeing'

edam · 08/07/2008 18:37

I gave ds singles first time around and then MMR booster. Because by the time he was four I was confident that he a. wasn't autistic and b. wasn't in a vulnerable sub-group. Haven't heard of anyone regressing age 4 after MMR booster.

TeacherSaysSo · 08/07/2008 18:47

Hecate that is sad, but you should write to the jabs.org website and tell them you want your money back. They are quick enough to campaign and support those who they think have been given autism by those nasty MMR government people.

Hecate · 08/07/2008 18:49

PMSL

I should, shouldn't I?

Twiglett · 08/07/2008 18:52

also a 4 year old now shouldn't have the overload potential of having had thimerosal in their primary jabs

(interestingly though DD who had MMR at 18 months and about a month ago at 4 has had bad reactions to both .. febrile fits and pneumonia first time, sky-rocketing fevers with febrile episodes second)
