Have been thinking about this for some time as have worn contacts/glasses for years. Has anyone had it done? Where did you have it done? Anyone had it done at the £395 per eye type places? Opinions please?

personally, if I was considering this, I would sod the cost and go to a teaching hospital eg Moorfields to get this done by an eye surgeon

Bunch · 08/07/2008 10:03

That's what I was thinking TBH.

the money they "make" also goes into research into eye diseases, iirc

I had a friend who went to "ultralase" - which isn't cheap, but sounds pretty good. The cost includes lifetime further care if need be. May be worth a look - He was very happy with them.

Didn't realise that. That's good then. I'm in Hampshire tho.

My friend had it done last year. She said that the £395 is a starting price and in reality cost her a hell of a lot more! She hasn't looked back though and would recommend it to anyone.

Thank you Solo, that's what i was hoping to hear!!

I had mine done 6 years ago at St Thomas' Hospital by this lovely man cost me £750 an eye (done at different times). I read some horror stories about "shops" and wanted to go to a hospital. Tried to have it done at Moorfields but they didn't do the LASEK that I wanted (based on PRK) so found Mr O'Brart who did a thorough consultation and explained the risks. Research, research, research is what I recommend (or go to Mr O'Brart)

i had this done 8 years ago at moorfield eye hospital, it is amazing, i was very short sighted and 12 hours after the op could read sub titles ect on a tv - brilliant! (it did cost much more than £395 - i think it was more £2500)

stressed2007 · 08/07/2008 19:50

nancy75 who did you use? Thanks

Hi,

I had mine done last year at Moorfields by Mr Gartry. He was (I think I remember correctly) the first person in the UK to perform laser eye surgery and is one of the leaders in his field. I was rejected from Ultralase because I have very slight blindness in one eye and they didn't want to take the risk. I am so glad they wouldn't treat me! Mr Gartry was a consumate professional and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. I went from -7.5 in both eyes to only needing glasses when driving (and it's borderline!) It has changed my life!

Cost was £4,000 for Lasik - which is one of the newer procedures and more accurate. I wouldn't risk my eyesight on any of the high street practices, although I know people who have and they have been very happy with the result. I asked Mr Gartry about the high st clinics and he said they are usually filled with inexperienced, foreign surgeons (2wk course!). If you go with somewhere like Ultralase make sure you know who your surgeon will be, and how many eyes he/she has treated (many clinics give you the number of eyes the clinic has treated as a whole - not quite the same!)

Good luck!

Claire

hi stressed2007, i had mr gartry too, he was brilliant. they put me intouch with people that had already had the op so that i could ask real people what it was like before i had it done, he was really thorough with all the pre op stuff and after care was also brilliant. if he is still at morefields i would definately recomend him.
