dd (7mo) plunged head first off our bed today

This took literally about 3 seconds - I had no idea she could move so far or so fast and feel absolutely terrible about it. I thought she had broken her neck for a split second, still feel sick thinking about seeing her nosedive over the side.

Poor little thing has a big red bump on her cheekbone (I feel aaaaaawwwwwful. bad mummy. )

I took her straight to the doctors (we were there within about 5mins) who checked her over and told me to look out for unusual tiredness or continual vomiting and dd seemed to have virtually forgotten all about it by the time we arrived there.

She has been bright for most of the day but a little crotchety this evening. We gave her a dose of calpol before bed on docs advice as her bump will be sore.

She has woken up 3x crying since going to bed though at 6.30pm and just wondering if I should be worried about this? She normally sleeps right through till about 6am, or wakes only once.

Falling off the bed is a right of passage, they ALL do it!!! If you are uneasy I would have her in your room with you tonight, more for your peace of mind than anything else.

hopeful bump.

just need some reassurance that this isn't something to panic about.

probably got a headache!

can you sleep beside her bed tonight? or bring her in with you?

umberella · 07/07/2008 22:23

I am putting off going to bed -she's right next door (I can hear her when she breathes heavily) but I don't think I will sleep tonight somehow. Just worried in case there's any damage they have missed.

I think I would only be worried if she was in a deep sleep and was difficult to wake, or woke up and vomited or something. My DD launched herself off the bed a few months ago... didn't seem to do her any damage, but I can still remember the sick feeling in my stomach!

jenniebee · 07/07/2008 22:41

This happens to all of them, my dd of 8 months did it the other day, never felt so sick in all my life, (she's fine)
Sleep with her by you tonight for piece of mind.

Next time I see one of these threads I'll just find one of the old threads on the same subject and save us all repeating ourselves every 3 weeks or so

luvaduck · 07/07/2008 22:50

this might help
more than likely she will be absolutely fine, most babies do it at some point.
this leaflet should give you things to look out for.
try some calpol?
if you're not happy in a few hours take her back...

I think most kids have been off the bed once. I managed to let ds do it multiple times, plus down the stairs twice and off the changing table once (dsd's fault that time)...all before 12 months old. He is now 7 and seems to show no lasting effects.

Don't worry.

PinkTulips · 07/07/2008 22:55

she might be able to sense you're stressed and hovering. as long as she doesn't have any unusual symptoms by this stage i'd say she's fine. she didn't hit her head in any danger zones if she has a bruise on her cheek

honestly they all do it, mine seem to take some sort of pleasure in doing it when i'm standing right there so i feel even worse for not catching them.
