Hi

Embarassing tmi alert - but would appreciate advice and experience

I have a small boil-type spot just inside my labia which is hard and painful.

Do I need to see my GP, which, although should't be is highly embarassing even after 2 children, or can I self treat - and what with?

Frustratingly I also need a smear but there are no appointments with nurses available today where I could kill 2 birds with one stone "while you're up there...." so now I face having to go twice before my AF, once for this and once for smear.

Much, Much

sounds like a bartholins cyst - try searching archive on MN as other women have posted about them/having them treated. you will need to see your GP though

thumbwitch · 07/07/2008 09:38

if it is a boil, and it could be, then application of warm-hot cottonwool, or flannel or something, will help to bring it to a head and then you can get rid of it.

My mum would use Savlon on it too, I wouldn't but that's because it never did any good for me while it seemed to cure everything on her.

hoxtonchick · 07/07/2008 09:40

agree with bundle, sounds like a bartholin cyst. i had one years ago (pre-kids) & it was super painful. don't want to scare you, but i ended up having an operation under general anasthetic to sort mine out. please go to the gp.

Ooooh! I remember having a large painful lump with a slight head on it too...heat and squeeze. It hurts like hell, but is such a relief when it's gone.

BellaBear · 07/07/2008 09:41

quite normal, could be an infected hair follicle or bunged up pore. they go away eventually - or you can squeeze it! a nurse reassured me they are quite common.

JacobsPrincess · 07/07/2008 09:43

Warm flannel, good squeeze, lashings of Savlon - it really does cure EVERYTHING!

thumbwitch · 07/07/2008 09:57

NHS direct info on bartholins cyst - does it sound like this? you have to click on links to follow through each section.

Thanks ladies - have just been looking at the mn history of fanjo problems and I'll get it checked out by docs this afternoon.

nsmechange frantically wonders how to recalculate her DCs nap time so she can have a bath and get clean before seeing GP. But at least she's a lady - the first appointment they tried to give me was with a male newly qualified GP about my age - far too embarrassing

thanks for the link thumbwitch. I don't think it's far enough inside to be a bartholins cyct, it might be a hair follicle I suppose or just a scratch that's got infected or something. Will report back after I've embarrassed myself in front of GP.

NCNC - did you get to the GP? what did they say?

namechangenamechange · 08/07/2008 11:09

hi, sorry forgot to post yesterday.

Yes, tis a small scratch which got infected with the normal bacteria there. Hav anti-biotics now. Glad I went though so thanks for the advice everyone

glad it was fairly straightforward for you - hope it wasn't too embarrassing!

I have had lump/spots in the same area.It is such a relief when i bust them open.Feels like getting rid of bacteria. etc.Not that i am not clean have 2 baths a day.It is relevant in this area as it is not exposed to air etc .It can be sore for a few days but they usally clear up or dispurse them selves and go of their own accord..
