I don't want glandular fever...

..so shall I not go for the swab and blood test?

What is to be gained by knowing? Is there any treatment? Or is it just a case of sitting it out? If so, what is the point in the tests?

I have already been told (by a not so helpful friend) that glandular fever isn't a 'real' illness, so now I am wondering whether I should just shut up and put up, as they say

I too was fobbed off with 'oh, it's just a virus' and ended up carrying on making myself even more ill. They tested me for it several times and it didn't show until after I'd been ill for months then it was the antibodies showing I'd had it all along. I ended up ill for quite a while as a result of over doing it.

Take care of yourself by resting when you can, eating well, drinking plenty of water, all the usual stuff - even though you may not feel like cooking it's important to eat healthy and stuff not junk which will make you feel worse. Try not to over do it when you have times when you have more energy as you can end up in a cycle like I did where you overdo it one day and have no energy the next day as a result.

Most importantly have the test, and if it's negative but you don't start feeling any better make sure you keep going back to the GP until you have answers and don't let them fob you off!

Hope you feel better soon

I sat a medical school entrance exam two weeks after, I didn't get a high enough mark to get an interview by three points. I went back to work in a childrens A&E and picked up everything going. I had to take loads of time off sick and got into so much trouble because I was exhausted and forgetting to turn up. I had chest infections, thrush, rashes, fevers, I was ill every week. I'm due to go back in October but I don't know if it's a good idea. I have days here and there where I am so tired I have no idea what I'm doing.

You need to rest. If not, the disease can affect your spleen- it gets enlarged- and that will be more serious.

I was teaching when I picked it up and felt totally wacked for ages afterwards.

There is no treatment- just rest, good food and lots of sleep.

Feel crappy today. Went to 'watch' my tennis lesson - so mentally feel very fed up with it today

Oh dear. It's just a bad day, you'll be feeling better soon. Try to take it easy and go with the flow.

naswm · 07/07/2008 16:50

I know, and I really wanted to play, but this little voice in my head said 'take it easy or you'll regret it'

Ohh, I like that little voice. It's the one that stops me studying though. You can play for a little while, then have a rest, then play again. Your body will tell you when it's had enough.
