TMI alert! How much blood is normal for a period?

I am having such a heavy period that I have to change my tampon at least every hour and had to sleep with a towel under me last night!

I have been having trouble with irregular bleeding, and went for a scan the other day - it looks like I have a polyp that needs to be removed from my womb. I was only spotting / light bleeding up to 2 days ago.
But now my period has come so heavy, I'm worried that something is wrong

That is far to much loss, how do you feel in yourself? I would phone a doctor and ask, try to rest and maybe have a coolish bath.

Thanks everyone

I did phone NHS direct who alerted our out of hours doctor and then he phoned me back and faxed a prescription to a nearby chemist (- impressive service, eh!) for some pills to slow the bleeding down.

I have picked them up, but not taken them yet as the bleeding is starting to gradually ease up, thank god! I just felt drained this morning. The NHS nurse told me to eat lots of iron-rich food and drink more (water), incase anyone else is in the same situation!

Have had same problem for past 3 years but now got to the stage where i can sometimes only get to the bottom of the stairs before i've got to go back & change tampon again !!!(TMI sorry).
Am booked in for an Endometrial ablation a week tomorrow as it had got to the stage where i couldnt even leave the house at that time of month & had labour type contractions.

It can depend on numerous things but age & aneamia are the main causes.
Good luck.
