My ds, who is actually nearly 4 has been potty/toilet trained for months and months, and has suddenly started pooing himself.

This first happened at pre-school, where he is very happy and settled (he asks to go even on a weekend !!!).

This has been happening on and off now for about three weeks.
At first I was patient, then have tried saying this is very naughty, and now I am wondering if perhaps he has lost the sensation or something.
When I ask him "where should you poo ?" he always says "on the toilet".

I'm just not sure how best to handle this, and if I am being over the top thinking is this just a lapse or could there be some medical reason.

Would be very grateful of any advise.

Thanks

My 3.5 year old daughter does this. She uses the toilet to wee but usually poo's in her knickers. She knows that this is wrong but still does it. It's soo anoying isn't it? I see her going red in the face trying to pooh in her knickers but when I try to put her on the toilet she shouts and cry's. I hope she will grow out of this.
Have a word with the doc or HV. Good luck.

My dd is four and still poos herself, and wees herself too, although she is capable of doing both on the loo when it suits her ! Ut could be medical, so get that checked out, I did recently as I was at my wits end. It was reassuring to know nothing is wrong medically, and now we are doing a star chart with my gp, she has to fill it then take it back when full, I also have to take her to loo after every meal and once in between, and this seems to be prompting her to go by herself sometimes. But it is an ongoing nightmare to be honest. She knows it is wrong, so going mad at her does no good. I would try to keep calm, but express disappointment, check out anything medical, and then let me know when and if you find a solution !!!

Yorkiemom, I had this with DS2 back in february. It lasted for about 6 weeks (DS2 just had 4th birthday in May)
I tried everything. I took him to the Dr's just to make sure it wasn't anything medical. After about 5 weeks we found he had worms. (yuck) Within a few days of treating him for worms he was back using the toilet.
Do get him checked out, it may well be that its nothing medical but there is no harm in being sure. Sorry I have no better advice for you, or even a magic solution. I know how frustrating it is for you, I think the main thing is to stay as calm as possible ( I faled miserably with this)

Thanks everyone. It is really annoying, especially as for months and months had been brill (both wees and poos - dont us mums have lovely conversations !!!)

I must admit that i have shouted "why are you doing this in your pants ??"

To which I just get the reply "because".

My ds does have delayed speech, so I can't really have a long conversation about this with him. I find this part really fustrating because he just does'nt have the words to explain this to me, and I try not to get too ratty with him because of this.

Oh well, its nice to know I'm not alone, thanks again - first one to find the miracle answer must spill all !!!!!

Oh, my daughter has a speech disorder and is having therapy for this. Maybe there is a link. I've heard that children with speech disorders sometimes resist becoming independant.
