Dentists and people who know about teeth-I'm in agony. HELP!

This morning I had veneers removed from 2 front teeth. They'd been there for 20 or so years and my gums have receded leaving an ugly margin. I decided to get them replaced with nice shiny new ones.

I was xrayed before their removal which showed a fracture at the root of one tooth but the dentist said that as the teeth were healthy and not painful or infected it had probably been done when I smashed my teeth in the first place.

Removing the old veneers was a bit if a trauma. Dentist said they were the best fitting veneers he'd seen and as such took a lot of grinding and poking to remove.

I've been fitted with temp veneers for now whilst the proper ones are made. My teeth are horribly sensitive. Even talking is sore. I've taken paracetamol and diclofenac with little effect. Is this normal or has something gone horribly wrong?

ouch sounds normal, why did you have them removed

piratecat · 03/07/2008 22:33

sorry to hear you are in pain. My guess is that your motuh has suffered trauma, as even your dentist siad they were stuck fast.

So many nerve endings to be aggrivated. I had a filling the day before yesterday, and was really surprised at the after effects, of the treatment. Ihave sensitive teeth/nerves too close too my teeth form my sinuses, and this extends the pain.

Give it a few days, and keep taking the painkillers. try and be calmer, it must have ben quite anordeal, as dentists canbe at times.

assdoc · 03/07/2008 22:41

Ok. Thanks for the reassurance.

I got them removed as over the last 20 years my gums have receded quite a lot leaving a wide and discoloured margin that I was very self conscious about.

Lets hope it settles over the next day or two. I convinced myself that the fractured tooth must have been further damaged by all the yanking/grinding and I'd end up having holes cut in my gums to get the broken root out. Not that I tend to over dramatise or anything,

when you have tooth pain it is very traumatic imo.

southeastastra · 03/07/2008 22:48

it will feel hyper sensitive though as there is no outer tooth there, sensodyne toothpast rubbed on the area may make it less painful

assdoc · 03/07/2008 22:48

So do you think they would have to cut my gums open to get the root out though? I mean if it was broken? Just the thoght makes me heave. UURGHHH

Having the work done was surprisingly ok. It's the aftermath thats getting me down.

Thanks for your sympathy piratecat

yes look after yourself and expect to feel a bit battered - dental work takes more out of you than you expect, i find...i second the sensodyne suggestion.

assdoc · 03/07/2008 23:08

lovelydear-just reading your name has made me feel better! thanks.

Today things seem to be a bit more settled. Still very sore but ok if I don't eat, talk or breathe through my mouth. Dabbing sensodyne of the tooth with my finger almost made me pass out last night it hurt so much but it was do-able this morning.

Hi, I have been a Qualified Dental Nurse for 20 yrs, and a Practice Manager for 5yrs, I am also one of the Managers at our local Out of hours emergency dental unit.
From what you have said it sounds as though your teeth are very sensitive from all the pulling and pushing about and also because the dentine has been exposed from where your gums have receeded. Try using Sensodyne toothpaste and rubbing some of it onto your teeth with your finger like a gel before you go to bed and leave on overnight. If things are no better in a few days contact your Dentist and explain you are still in discomfort. Hope this helps

assdoc · 04/07/2008 18:46

Thanks Tas. Do you think my broken root will be ok then? Or is no one mentioning it because you all know it'll have to be dug out with sharp things and pliers?

assdoc can i just say that it kind of depends where the fracture in your tooth is if the fracture is a 'hairline' crack vertically along the tooth the new veneers may bond the fracture back together if it runs horizontally further investigation should be done. i would presume from what you said in describing the pain it doesnt come from the nerve dying which is what you would be concerened about with the 'crack'. i would second tas1 itis most likely sensitivity. if sensodyne doesnt work there are toothpastes your dentist could perscribe to help. I hope your dentist warned you to be carefull what you eat with temp veneers i know its probibly the last thing on your mind at the moment but strongly colourd foods such as tomato soup may discoulour tempory veneers!!! I hope this helps and good luk i hope your happy with the finished result

josiejellybean · 04/07/2008 21:12

woops my spelling !!!!! please forgove me !!!

assdoc · 04/07/2008 21:14

JJB LOL at the prospect of orance tomato soup coloured teeth! very attractive.

The fracture is horizontal all the way from left to right. I saw it on the x-ray. TBH I wondered if he would go ahead as I thought it could make things worse but he insisted it would be fine.

assdoc · 04/07/2008 21:15

orange. orance sounds like a new poncey colour.

josiejellybean · 04/07/2008 21:26

HMMM without seeing the x-ray its difficult to tell, is the pain like a dull throbbing ache? when were the xrays taken?

assdoc · 04/07/2008 21:44

X-rays were taken yesterday. The initial tooth breaking was 20 years ago and my dentist is assuming that the root fractured then. I have had several serious blows to the face over recent years though due to owning a particularly silly horse that thought it was great fun to smack me in the face with her big stoopid head.

The pain is that electric shock kind of sting whenever I touch the offending tooth. The tooth without the fracture is practically pain free now.

What kind of investigation should they do? I can't bear the thought of sharp instruments and probing.
