What does it feel like when you are about to faint?

I had a 'funny turn' this morning and I just wondered if I was on the verge of fainting or whether it's something else (I've only fainted once before and it was very sudden)

I get black patches appearing before my eyes and just feel woozy and I know I am going to go.

southeastastra · 02/07/2008 16:05

you feel like you're going to throw up.

thebecster · 02/07/2008 16:05

When I faint, my vision usually goes darker first, my legs go wobbly, everything goes much quieter, things start to spin, then WHAM! Then I wake up all embarrassed surrounded by strangers. Doesn't happen so much as it used to, thankfully!

micci25 · 02/07/2008 16:09

i go dizzy and feel woozy and 'spacey' and things start to fade out of focus.

zephyrcat · 02/07/2008 16:11

I used to get this at school but always managed to stop it somehow... I'd get the fading vision and things going quieter - like you've got your fingers in your ears and used to feel a bit 'fizzy'! Like pins and needles but soft

SheBangsTheDrums · 02/07/2008 16:19

I get tunnel vision and things start to get quieter and muffled, like I'm fading out.
But, I've never actually fainted I always manage to "come back"

Mercy · 02/07/2008 16:20

Thanks - I'll describe what happened to me.

I was sitting on the toilet and suddenly felt rather dizzy. I got up, lurched forward a bit and my heart was going like the clappers. I somehow got onto the sofa and my arm and head were very shaky - I tried to get up but it started all over again. What made it worse was that I was due to get ds and a friend from nursery in about 20 minutes - and I was convinced I was going to have a heart attack or a seizure.

Do you know what triggers your fainting episodes?

mine is not eating enough, though i thought i had grown out of not remembering to eat when i was a teenager, i have a major loss of appetite atm and it seems its happening again!!! though no actual fainting just yet, is just dizzy spells which remind me i need to eat!

Psychomum5 · 02/07/2008 16:24

I start with what can only be described as 'sperm like' wiggle going in front of my eyes. I then feel odd and shakey, start to tingle all over, vision goes, and then I am normally aware of being on the floor!!!

mine can be as simple as standing up from lying down, getting out of a hot bath, standing up too long, blood pressure dropping, and then, pregnancy also is a major cause (altho not been pregnant now for almost 6yrs, so one cause cured).

horrid horrid feeling, and I get it at least once a week!

GorgonsGin · 02/07/2008 16:25

My vision begins to darken and I get a ringing in my ears. Next thing I wake up on the floor feeling very woosy/wobbly and also very hot/clammy/cold sweat in my case.

expatinscotland · 02/07/2008 16:27

like psycho, i got like pins and needles feeling all over, and in my ears.

there was this poster hanging on a wall advocating literacy, and it read 'READ', but when i looked at it i thought, 'how, odd, i've got something like dyslexia' because all the letters were scrambled up.

that's the last thing i remember.

i woke up in on an examining couch.

(i fainted after having an MMR booster and i guess i tried to get up and leave too soon).

ShowOfHands · 02/07/2008 16:27

I get the fading vision and sounds, then a whooshing like being under water and a racing heart.

Pregnancy was the worst culprit but not having eaten, standing too long in the heat and low blood pressure are usually the problems.

Psychomum5 · 02/07/2008 16:34

oh yes, forgot the 'rushing in the ears' sound......very strange.

expat...when did you have an MMR booster???

Mercy · 02/07/2008 16:35

Ok, I think it may have been due to not enough to eat and too much wine last night then I was pretty dehyrated this morning come to think of it.

But then again what happened to me sounds different to other peoples experiences of fainting. I'm turning into a real hypochondriac these days.

I feel nauseous, sweaty and then tunnel vision.

I can pull it back up to that point by sitting down and putting my head between my knees.

If not, the black curtain closes in and BAM.

spudmasher · 02/07/2008 20:59

I fainted in M and S - 4 mnths pg with dd1.It was the black spodges and everything and my hearing went. I was at the till clutching a sarnie really needing to eat. They must have thought I was a drug addict or something. But it gets worse....as I came round being assisted by nice M and S staff I smelt the most farty awful smell and realised that I was the one who had let one rip in my fainted state. Oh it was awful. In future I will only faint in private.

badgermonkey · 02/07/2008 21:01

I have only fainted once - it was from hunger/low blood sugar and I felt like my stomach was dropping down to my feet.

Mercy · 02/07/2008 21:03

eek, how awful for yuo spudmasher

morningpaper · 02/07/2008 21:05

I feel like I'm going to throw up or have diahoorea (must learn to spell that before I am 50)

So what often happens is that DH hears a CRASH and then finds me in front of the toilet with my pants around my ankles

spicemonster · 02/07/2008 21:06

I can definitely tell when it's going to happen - go deaf, vision fades around the edges, feel really sick. If I get my head between my knees fast enough, I can stop it. It's usually connected to my period.

spudmasher · 02/07/2008 21:06

Oh thanks MP. I feel a lot better now. LOL!

girlandboy · 02/07/2008 21:08

I go deaf first, so I can usually deflect the faint by putting my head between my knees.

I'm afraid it's always blood tests that do it for me. I'm ok if I have the test lying down.

The film "Master and Commander" was the cause of my last fainting session. There was a nasty amputation scene, and I had to stagger out of the room. I only watched it because Russell Crowe was in it!

morningpaper · 02/07/2008 21:12

When I was with my first husband, I fainted in the attic and wedged my bum between two rafters and got stuck

most embarassing

girlandboy · 02/07/2008 21:16

morningpaper - lol. You've just made me choke on a biscuit.

DumbledoresGirl · 02/07/2008 21:16

I have only fainted once and it was most peculiar. I was 20 weeks pregnant with my last child. I got up in the morning and went straight into the shower as I always do. I washed my hair and I think the heat of the water on my head coupled with just getting out of bed did it for me. All that I remember was that I sort of froze. I can remember not being able to move. And the next thing I know I was on the floor of the shower and dh was trying to get me out.

No nausea or spots before the eyes or tunnel vision of any of those other things people talk about. Weird.
