2 year old DS had concussion yesterday, now slightly worried about him today

He tripped whilst running and hit the corner of his eye socket on the corner of his wooden toy chest. Stunned himself and to cut long story short ended up at Minor Injuries and they said he had concussion. Massive bruising to boot. About 6 hours after the accident he seemed pretty fine, a little over-sensitive to things but otherwise absolutely fine. He ate dinner well, slept well and seemed fine first thing this morning. But now he is being really clumsy. He's dropping things, falling over and seems very very nervous. Slightly concerned as to whether this is related, normal or should I take him back to the hospital? He doesn't really want to play either, just wants cuddles, but that could be because he was a bit shaken by it. Anyone been in this situation, know if it's normal or whether I should get him seen again?

My ds was at A&E today with a minor injury and dh was given a leaflet about concussion (it was a head injury) which said to look out for:

  • drowsiness or confusion
  • continuous headaches
  • repeated vomiting
  • weakness in one or more limbs
  • difficulty in seeing, breathing or speaking
  • continuous discharge or bleeding from ear/nose/mouth
  • fits
  • any other abnormal behaviour

The leaflet also says to phone A&E or GP if you have any other worries. I think it would be worth a call for your peace of mind?

Personally I would take him straight to A&E but I am paranoid mummy. At least ring A&E or NHS Direct. Better safe than sorry.

If you are at all worried I would definitely get him checked out - or call NHS direct first. He might just be shaken up by what happened and needing lots of reassurance. DS2 fell down a flight of stairs once and banged his head, was ok but I remember the symptoms to look out for in the following 48hrs were confusion, vomiting, not seeming to focus properly. Best of luck and I hope he is feeling better soon.

ok, thanks. He doesn't seem confused. He's talking normally, just very clumsy and wanting cuddles (fair enough). I think I will take him back up there. Far better to look like a paranoid mummy than anything be wrong I think. Thanks for the advice.

Hope everything goes ok, let us know how you get on. Good luck.

How did you get on?

Well I'm glad I went. He's absolutely fine but they were a little concerned so kept him on the children's observation ward for the afternoon/evening. He was definitely quite clumsy and not quite right. He's completely normal today just looks like he's done a few rounds in the ring!

Thank you all

Good, glad he is fine
My ds2 also looks like he has done a few rounds in hte ring today, but that is due to his big sister putting eye-shadow on him

I'm glad everything is ok. I seem to be permanently at the doctors for one thing or another but I think its best to put your mind at rest rather than working yourself up with worry!!
