Last week he has had a bad cough (he is almost 23 months) If he has coughed anything up he has swallowed it again I havent seen him spit anything out dont think he would even know how to do that.

Sunday he tripped with a toy drumstick in his mouth and was gagging so we called 999 and they took him to A&E. Doctor had a look at him and said he was absolutely fine that the gagging was just a reflex and there was no damage done to him.

As week has progressed his cough has got worse. Normally if you ask him "Are you ok?" he says "yes!" Yesterday he was coughing a lot and I asked and he said "No" which actually freaked me out because its the first time I have ever asked him that and got that answer. I asked a few more times, each time he said no.

So I took him to GP last night. Didnt mention the drumstick though but GP gave him a thorough examination and said it was just a bad cold with mucus making him cough.

Forgot to mention earlier - for the last week his sleep has been REALLY bad. He is getting up in the middle of the night and being uncontrollable, jumping arond on his bed, our bed etc very hard to get him back to sleep. DH and I are shattered - this is also strange because he has slept through consistenly since he was 10 months.

Just now we were brushing our teeth and when he took his toothbrush out there was a significant amount of blood on it!!! And when he spat out there was some on his spit. I had a good look in his mouth and cant see any gums bleeding.

I should add - he seems happy and full of beans. In fact if anything yesterday he was much more hyper than usual as if he'd had lots of sugar and he didnt. He is playing, talking loads and laughing. Its just the cough, no sleep, and now some blood from his mouth.

are you giving him any meds for the cough? calpol sends my dd hyper

blood can seem worse from mouth so perhaps not too serious but if you are worried, keep going back to gp. apart from anything, coughs can develop so worth keeping an eye on (sorry if stating obvious there)

thanks morocco I am giving him medised (just gave it to him before bed tonight for the first time in 6 months!!) That is all my GP suggested. His cough is terrible though. I had to rock and sing him to sleep, poor thing.

I don't know about medical possibilities so won't advise on that front other than regular trips to gp if not getting better.

however, I find when dc are a bit off colour or fighting something off, their behaviour does change (usually for worse) so I'd be hesitate about drawing conclusions about hyper.

the blood - could be from sore throat from coughing or gums most likely throat if lots of coughing I'd have thought.

keep in touch with gp.

ditto everyone else really, go back to the gp if you are worried and trust your mum-instinct because it is usually right... but what did strike me too whilst reading the op was that calpol sends my dc bonkers too. and they can't tolerate the sugar-free version, tho they do have food allergies. don't know if medised does the same to my boys but DD goes a bit dotty on that too as it's usually accompanied by ventolin inhaler for her asthma! It's almost like she has felt so ill, then feels soooooooo much better she has to go crazy instead.

morocco · 03/07/2008 20:01

ah, medised, well perhaps very sadly for you he is one of the ones for which medised sends them hyperactive instead of sleepy. perhaps worth trying another type of paracetamol with no colourings in

how is he today? and the cough?

gigglewitch · 03/07/2008 21:54

i wandered in to ask same as morocco

stealthsquiggle · 03/07/2008 21:58

not to worry you, but I would be inclined to take him back to docs/A&E and mention the drumstick incident if I were you.

It is just possible that he inhaled a bit of it.

On the other hand it is almost certainly that he has a cough, and the hyper-ness is caused by medised - I know a proportion of children do have that reaction.

eenybeeny · 04/07/2008 10:53

well I am only giving him medised once a day (so far for the last 2 days) at bedtime. Not really giving him anything for the day time. His cough is still really bad but he did sleep through the night last night. He also has a very snotty nose which backs up what GP said about it being a bad cold.

The drumstick is smooth plastic rounded one and I can easily see by looking at it nothing broke off - and toy drum/stick were bought from Toys R Us for up to 18 months - he is almost two and my own lack of common sense did not tell me to keep it away from him though I feel it should have and I feel bad about that!
