Finger amputation need a hand hold.

My cat bit me in August when I was trying to medicate her. Ive been on antibiotics since 28.8 but it was still badly infected. On Tuesday they told me the bone was infected and the surgeon wouldnt know how much unti he opened it up. I went into surgery for it to be cleaned out (for the 4th time) on Thursday. They hand is well bandaged and it looks like they have amputated between the first and second knuckle.
It was a real sock and I'm struggling to cope with the pain. Does anyone know what the future looks like for me?

How long will it take to heal?
What will I still be able to do?
What wont I be able to do?
Any tips and hints to aid recovery?

Im having the dressing changed tomorrow and a bit nervous to see it.

Bloody hell, some people on this thread have had an empathy bypass. Sorry you’re feeling so low and in pain, @jmh740. Sending sympathy and a hug.

Absolutely agree.

Random related but not strictly on topic question. How come you didn't have to take your polish off?

I had an op that was nowhere near my fingers and they insisted on polish removal because of the GA and checking oxygen levels.

WitsEndFFS · Today 09:39

Her other hand was clear, @LardyMcLardarse . Perhaps they used that?

I don’t know that I’d have been letting anyone near my sore hand, so any polish on it would have had to stay on.

They wanted to do that under local anaesthetic? That is shocking. I hope they have supplied sufficient painkillers.

They do hip and knee replacements without general anaesthesia.

@jmh740 I know exactly why you chose a GA. I've had 4 eye ops under locals and I'm done with it. Even though it's safe and mostly painless, I want a general for the next one! I hope you're feeling better about it all and in less pain soon.

i had armpit surgery and had to remove nail varnish,
i guess they acted quickly
sorry op i hope it is sorted now

Struggling today, spent the day in bed crying.
Full of Mum guilt that cant take ds out for half term.
In so much pain.

Gently, your son is old enough to be aware that Mum is in a lot of pain - I doubt very much he's feeling hard done by, he will just want his mum to feel better.

There really should be NO "guilt" about something that is just not your fault,

I'm so sorry that you're experiencing this constellation of not nice things. It sounds like the job offer was tainted by the cat bitten finger rather than your inability to perform it well. I wouldn't advise doing anything about that just now while you're so emotional, but when you do get back into school, I would have a word with whoever might have been making that decision with the new line manager. I'd explain how the probationary period wasn't reflective of what your actual performance in the role would be like because of the finger. If you've been at the school for some time, I'm sure a sympathetic person would agree to give you another change at a probationary trial in the role (unless of course they've already appointed someone else). I feel so bad for you and do hope that you can not only recover your health, but your sense of self worth. I'm sure your DC wouldn't want you doing things with them while you're in so much pain. And why don't you just do an online food shop rather than traipsing around them while you're like this?

They have appointed someone the interview was just the new line manager. There are very few opportunities to progress so I was really hoping I would get it, I know when I'm at 100% I am better than the person they appointed. But I just have to accept it now.
Only went to aldi for bread and milk, oh and dd out doing the shopping now have already rung once to ask which food to get the dog🤣 I am a big over thinker and dont want to go back to work and see her every day. I just need to focus on healing for now.

Can you not phone gp or urgent care and get something stronger?

I think youve possibly been a bit naive in thinking any risk of amputation was small when you've had multiple surgical debridements and multiple courses IV antibiotics- what did you think would be left for them to clean out, especially if the bone was dead? Also surely would've been better to have a local and then you can discuss with doctor at the time? You also told the doctor to do what was necessary for your recovery so they did and you would've signed consent forms.
Not sure why any of it came as a shock really although horrible youre in such pain.

She could still be feeling shock. She doesn't need to feel blame as well.

Even more sorry to hear this, as it will be frustrating as well as disappointing to return to work now. But I still hope your recovery goes well and that things do look up for you in the future. Also, was there a reason why you couldn't have crushed the pill and mixed it with your cat's food rather than try to shove it down her throat?

WitsEndFFS · Today 13:26

Concentrate on getting better. Perhaps now isn’t the time for a job challenge, anyway.

The vet said not to mix it with her food, i rang them after the bite to ask for help giving it to her another vet said just mix it with her food!

OP. Can you call 111 and get an out of hours appointment for better pain relief. You shouldn’t be suffering like this.

I agree, 111 can sometimes seem like a long drawn out process. But it does put things on the record. You said there were some errors on your notes, I think that could be discussed with them, as I've noticed when you tell someone at a dressing change for eg... they are focusing on the task and don't add it to your notes. they may also have some ideas on pain relief... Tell them how down you are feeling and what a shock its been. Get it on record because it will speed up requests to see GP etc.

Sorry you are having a tough time. Its early days and quite a shock for you, on top of that the job issue. I think you were wise to say you would focus on your healing for the time being, one step at a time.

We had a half term with post surgery and its easy to feel guilty re DC, but as a pp said, they are probably just worried about you and hoping you are healing. ,

Depending on location and how old your teens are, maybe they could take a trip to the cinema together with some spending money for treats. Maybe your teen's friends parents would invite them over to hang out for a few hours. That would at least feel like an outing.
Also try to get as much sleep as possible. Distract yourself with podcasts or reading or binge watch some a netflix anyhing that Gives you a worry break.
Be kind to yourself Flowers

There’s stuff available for helping with cats and meds. Pill popping devices. Also actual edible pill pockets. Think dreamies do some. Might be worth a try if still struggling.

Well how can you be in shock when told the bone is dead and then tell the doctor you want a general but trust his judement to do whats best.

Because it is a shock. She has woken up with a part of her body removed. I work in an area where we have to get consent and discuss all the possibilities that a certain procedure may carry. If a woman then experiences the worst consequence we support her, debrief her and signpost to further support if needed. We wouldn't go "well we did say that could happen". It's not hard to try and understand where her shock, grief and upset is coming from. Her aftercare has been abysmal.

Well you’re horrible 🤨🤨

tinyspiny · Today 16:52

It’s a bit simplistic to say that she signed a consent form that said do as much as needed so she shouldn’t be shocked how it’s turned out . I’m having a cataract op under general in the near future and I will be shocked if I come round to find it’s gone tits up and I’m blind in one eye even though there is a miniscule risk of that occurring that I’m aware of in advance .Edited to say I hope you feel better soon @jmh740
