Ideas for entertaining myself when immobile

Having smashed my ankle in spectacular fashion, I am probably looking at at least eight weeks laying around with an elevated leg. Looking for ideas I may not have thought of for sofa or bed pastimes (not the obvious sexy bed ones!).

I already knit and crochet. Have access to streaming platforms on my tablet. Read copiously already. Maybe something new to learn? Play online word games but open to any good card game websites? Any other suggestions. Only on week two and starting to go mad. Probably don't want to learn a language as not a huge traveler.

Are you open to sexy sofa pastimes?

Morethanthis71 · 12/10/2026 21:11

Very easy to get hooked on Meowdoku! I could spend the majority of the eight weeks on that and catching up on The Street, ITV drama at its best. I'd then go back and watch Grantchester from the beginning so that I don't miss any James Norton on the screen time. Speedy recovery OP!

My sister was recently in the same boat and she's usually very active so struggled with it.
She read a lot. Farming games on tablet.
Lots of free courses on Open Learn. Everything from history to medical, literature to computing.

Ha ha definitely not!

I agree The Street is excellent. Could rewatch that. Already binged East of Eden. Will check that meowdoku site out. Open learn is very good idea.

Lego is your friend here. Plus audio books.

FadedRed · 12/10/2026 21:30

There are some excellent, and free, short study courses on the Open University website.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 12/10/2026 21:31

Online jigsaws on a tablet - can't lose bits, don't have to store them, no special trays needed.

Can you wfh? Or could you do some volunteer work at home. Not sure if it's a thing, but I would like to help out people who struggle to use tech, or make calls, for medical appointments etc when (if!) I am old enough to retire, because I've seen how members of my family would literally have died without that support, when their appointments get cancelled/they don't know how to access help/have health conditions that make it difficult.
There's surely some charities/organisations that would like support from a person who is bedridden but has access to a phone/laptop, so if you're interested, you could look into that? Maybe even your PTA would like someone to do stuff at home, if you have school age kids.

Thanks for the link. Got a few more ideas from there. Feeling a little less worried now.

Words with friends is a version of Scrabble but online?
How about a small Lego set? I use an art easel to put the pieces on.
Hope you are better soon x

Not sure I'm feeling good enough for that as on lots of painkillers and an operation coming up. I'm signed off sick at present but once not having to constantly elevate leg I'll work from home until I can mobilise to office again.

DIY art club or similar - good value painting by numbers sets. Listen to podcasts while you do it.

SmallDFartyCarNRG · 12/10/2026 21:55

Also enjoy Meowdoku (and the flattery!)
I would suggest a Netflix series - find a genre and some old classics. I had never heard of Bones (no idea how I missed it was is Forensic Anthropology which was a passion in my teens) and that has kept me going for a flare up.

If your hands are OK I would also suggest tapestry as a change from crochet. Find a nice cushion cover you can do so it feels useful. Reading all the books piled up by the bed also feels like an achievement to me! Just don't end up on World of Books afterwards!

Peabody25 · 12/10/2026 21:56

I’ve just been bed bound for a couple of weeks with sciatica so not half as bad as you, but I did Lego, played boggle on the app, wrote a Christmas present list and started my shopping, downloaded a lovely game called township which I could play whenever I wanted, did loads of reading, sudoku puzzles, word search books, nice online food shops with more goodies in.

could you get ahead of the Christmas game and start planning any food, presents, write cards?

murasaki · 12/10/2026 21:56

Colouring books can be quite engrossing, get a nice set of pens. There are even sweary ones should you feel like it.

MadnessInMyMethod · 12/10/2026 22:09

Cross stitch? You can get kits for almost any type of picture, size and level of complexity.

EmmaWhitfield · 12/10/2026 22:46

hope the ankle heals well! i'm a big word puzzle fan. wordle and connections are both free and gentle. i also play blossom daily, and

Notanotherrestructure · 12/10/2026 22:50

Duolingo maybe?

MarcusBrigstockesfringe · 14/10/2026 09:58

I started knitting after my last op.

I also watched a lot of Instagram and many films and box sets.

I recommend the following:

Under the banner of heaven
Newsroom
The Diplomat
Succession
Last seen
Mobland
Day of the jackal
Black Doves
The Gentleman

I've enjoyed all of these in the last few years though you may have already seen them all.

Good luck with your recovery!

I like genealogy and volunteered with Freecen who digitise census records. They send you a bunch of photos of records and you type them up. You often come across some really interesting ones, or ones where you have to research street names or occupations if its not immediately clear what a word says.
