I've recently found migraleve - it's really good. I get flashing lights and a blind spot before the pain kicks in, and if I catch it in time, the migraleve even makes them go away.
Had a really bad one last week though, when the aura came back after a while though.

Nonthing really takes the pain away for me completely, but going to bed in a dark room is essential. I have found those cool and soothe gel pads make me feel a bit better.
Oh, and it is vital that you take any painkillers as soon as you feel the migraine coming on otherwise I find they won't really work.

Hi onlygirl. There was a very supportive thread a few days ago, will try and find link.

Sending you lots of sympathy in the meantime.

I try and avoid my triggers -

Dehydration
Flourescent (sp) lights
Red wine

I agree with everyone else - it's really important to take painkillers as soon as you get the first inkling. Mine is always a very distintive pain behind my eye.

Get the painkillers early; migraleve are good and Neurofen now do a migraine pain killer.

Drink plenty of liquids (especially if you are prone to sickness )

Dont try to fight through it, you will not win, lie in a dark and quiet room with a cold flannel over your eyes and try to get some sleep.

Until recently I have had 3 separate migraines per month for a few years, all lasting around 4 days each. Nothing would get rid of it, although I do take cocodomol which our local pharmacist said is basically migraleve (but cheaper). I've worked out that its aspartame (found in diet drinks) that causes it and so now keep totally away. No migraine for over 3 weeks now.

There were some good tips here

fymandbean · 29/06/2008 20:36

avoid the triggers as much as possible

Immediately take soluble painkiller as soon as you feel the start of a migraine (paracetamol or aspirin) - your system slows down so often this is the only thing that'll get into you quickly enough

Get the doctor to prescribe zolmatriptin or similar as it works wonders (but I can't drive with it as it makes me woozy)

Rest and drink lots of water

buy a migracap

I get them really rarely, maybe once every couple of years, but they last about a week when I do get them with all the nausea and flashing lights... horrid. this time as I'm bfing I took 1000mg paracetamol combined with 400mg ibuprofen and it was enough to make it bearable. I was pain free but felt rather woolly around the edges. Would agree with the migraleve though, just wasn't sure if it was ok when bfing.
