Recurrent Tonsilitis - how many infections in 8 weeks is too many????

My ds who has just turned 5 has got tonsilitis AGAIN. Had to take him to emergency doc last night who has done a throat swab to send away to the lab.

This is his third bout since the first week of May...I think that is excessive and am worried. It makes him so ill - last time he had a temp of 40.8 and we were struggling to get it down.

Anyway, he's on amoxycillin AGAIN - third dose in 8 weeks and will miss more school this week...my question is...would a doctor consider this excessive or normal? My family has a history of tonsil related problems - my parents both had theirs out when young and my brother had to have his out as an emergency op about 8 years ago and my sister has just been told she has got to have hers out (she is 34).

Any advice? I am ringing his paediatrican tomorrow to see what he thinks (he is under hscare for asthma).

Am I just being a worry wort??? Or does this need dealing with???

I think they need to have had a certain number of infections over a period of a year before they consider taking the tonsils out - and I'm not sure which age they will take them out from. DS is 2 and has had 4 lots of antibiotics already for sore throats so I'm sure he'll have his tonsils out when he's older.

My DS1 has exactly the same as this when he was 5 3 doses of tonsilitis over the summer - worked out at once every three weeks. The last dose was evil and lasted 2 weeks.

Thinking back I asked the same question and I think the answer was 4 bouts over the course of the winter for 3 years on the trot - weird thing to say as DS had his in the summer but he managed not to get it again for a long while so I never had to test the theory.

I think they are very cautious about taking tonsils out these days. Apparently, tonsils are relatively large until the age of about 7 and then they either get smaller or they are smaller relative to thesize of the child so they can expect to get it less then. This has certainly been our experience.

Fingers crossed this is your DS's last dose for a while.

Hope he feels better soon.

Can I suggest you try homeopathy - I used to suffer form recurring tonsillitis form age 15 to 21 then I started using homeopathic remedies and it sorted it out.
