Help me diagnose what's wrong with my son please?

He's 19 mths and on Friday a tiny rash appeared on his torso. It looked liked tiny pin pricks under the skin. It didn't seem to bother him at all, so I put it down to a heat rash or similar, which he's had before, and we went off camping as planned.

On Saturday it had spread to his arms and legs too, though they were still pretty pale and not that noticeable, and again, didn't bother him.

This morning we woke up ( in a tent 200 miles from home!) and he's come out in a few larger spots, about the size of insect bites. These bigger spots are mostly on his torso and bum. The smaller spots are still there too.

A couple had pus-ey type heads on them but most were smooth, just a raised red lump. He's not itching, and seems quite well in himslef, no temp. or anything.

My first thougth was chicken pox, as a fw kids have had it round here recently, but the symptoms don't seem to tie in exactly.

I phoned our out of hours GP service, who said not to bring him to the hospital as he may be infectious (eh?!) but to go and see our GP tomorrow.

Anyone got any ideas??

Thanks in advance

ds1 has the same and i suspect chicken pox...no bliasters yet though,. The boy he sits next at schiool had it last week

lulumama · 29/06/2008 15:39

molloscum?

AuntieMaggie · 29/06/2008 15:43

Keep an eye on him and if he gets a temp or any other symptoms be straight on the phone again to the GP service just incase. But hopefully just early onset of chickenpox.

Jojay · 29/06/2008 15:49

What's molloscum Lulu?

I haven't heard of it, and I've typed it into the search part of NHS Direct, but nothing's coming up.

Whoops - found it now - it's molluscum!!

Hmmm, maybe....

MeMySonAndI · 29/06/2008 15:52

Seems like molluscum but at least in DS's case, molluscum was FAR from spreading that much and that fast.

lulumama · 29/06/2008 15:52

try molloscum contagium

it is a viral thing, where you get lots of little raised bumps.. some get pus in them..it goes away of its own accord, but can last a few months

Jojay · 29/06/2008 15:53

I wouldn't say they're particularly wart-like though - more like an insent bite and not firm to touch

lulumama · 29/06/2008 15:57

sorry for rubbish spelling!

Jojay · 29/06/2008 16:02

Don't worry - I'd never even heard of it, let alone be able to spell it!!!!

I'll keep a close eye on him and take him to the GP in the morning. I just wish the bl&%*y GP at the hospital would have seen him - if it's nothing then he can go to the childminder, if it's not I need time off work. It would be so much easier to know that today rather than tomorrow. Oh well.

Oh the joys of being a working Mum!!!

Thnaks for all your advice

Jojay · 02/07/2008 19:30

OP posts:
BobbyGrantycal · 03/07/2008 13:54

jojay oit was slapped cheek - ds2 has it on his face; ds1 only on his torso

Jojay · 04/07/2008 21:44

Oh, poor boys!!

Hope they're not too miserable.

My DS is on the mend now - the spots look horrendous but they're scabbing over, and he's got a bit more energy again.

Oatmeal is brilliant in the bath to stop itching. You stick some porridge in an old sock or pair of tights and shove it in the bath while it's running. Use sock to rub over skin in the bath. It's also brilliant for eczema or any other itchy thing.

It MUST be a sock you don't want to wear again. V difficult to remove porridge from sock.

halogen · 04/07/2008 21:53

Put porridge oats in the sock, I mean. Not actual made porridge.

Jojay · 06/07/2008 18:07

I tried that once for nappy rash and it did make the bath water lovely and soft.

Might try it again, but he's so much better now, I might be too late!

Glad to hear he is better!
