Hi rdk

Reflux is very common, my DD suffers with it and although the Gaviscon has helped with the reflux she is still very sicky. Is your baby gaining weight ok?

If you search for messages at top of page and put in reflux then loads of threads will appear from people in the same situation, I had a good read through them when DD was first diagnosed. Most babies are rid of it between 6-12months so try not to worry too much

thanks for that im didnt know how to read posts like that.

My baby had reflux very badly. We were always at the hospital getting weighed etc. She struggled with her weight gain because of it, but I am pleased to say that it stopped when she went onto solids at 6 months.

There are things that we did (as well as the medication). These included:
. After feeds do not wind and sit him in a chair as upright as poss
. Feed him in an upright position not lying down.
Is your son crying a lot or has the gaviscon helped with this?

If he is happy on gaviscon and his weight gain is good then I wouldn't worry about the stickiness. If the gaviscon is not helping with the heartburn and if son is unhappy a lot of the time and not gaining weight then the paediatrician will put him on stronger meds but these can make him sick dd couldn't take them.

I know it is hard but it does get better. DD is now 15 months and hasn?t been sick since she was 6 months old. Hers was a very bad case and her weight is still low but she eats like a horse. Catching up I think!!

rdk sympathies, a friend has a baby with severe reflux and it is incredibly draining for her. I hope yuo are OK?

your ds is the same age as mine give or take a fwew days (Bas is April 7th). I find he's now able to use a bumbo chair which helps after meals, Bas doesnt have reflux as such but does have severe stresses every time he's put down which cause bad poseting and he has poor weight gain anyhow.

Maybe the chair would help him retain milk?

My friends lo was prescribed milk thickeners at the hospital, she has been told surgery is very much a last resort.

DS has silent reflux...so slightly different in that he has no vomiting but lots of acid and lots of pain.

Don't worry about being referred to the hospital. It's the best thing that happened to ds. You'll see a specialist with much more experience of dealing with the problem than your GP and there are other medications that can help.

The Little Refluxers website was set up recently for parents of children with reflux.

It's a great place to get advice, tips and support.

Hope your LO is better soon.

domperdione (theirs a medicine its not the champers of a similar name!!) and ranitine are the best treatments for reflux if its severe and gaviscon doesnt work (which it rarely does if true reflux)

these medicines can only be prescribed by a paediatrcian or on their say so unless you have a private gp!!

ask for a referral.

i am a childrens nurse and have nursed lots of relfux babies (use to have them in when so serious constantly sick and didnt put on weight), could tell a reflux baby by holding them and giving one feed - became a bit on an expert.

my 9mth old niece has it and has been on gaviscon for months and eventually my sister has nagged and nagged for these medicines saying "my sister says...". Baby been on them 2mths and is so much better

also trying folding a towel (or a thin pillow) into four and placing under mattress where baby's head lays so they are slightly tilted this helps them get to sleep - make sure it under mattress never lay baby directly on pillow.
