Does anybody understand liver function tests and reasons for raised levels

Hi
I have had some blood tests done recently which showed raised liver function I think the number was 97.
I have yet to see my gp about this and the test has to be repeated.
However does anybody know about liver function on here and what a normal test result is.
Why would it be raised.

it could be for a variety of reasons, as your liver does many differnt things, eg filters toxins, produces bile. I dont know enough about it to answer your question, sorry, but i think it would depend on what your gp was working on from your symptoms.

I have liver problems, yet produce normal liver function tests. Hope someone soon will be able to give better advice.

I think that LFT's (Liver function tests) are actually a range of tests.

Without knowing which of the tests was at 97 it is difficult to know what the problem might be.

Some tests indicate you have something as minor as a cold. Others are obviously more serious - and without knowing more about the ttest giving a raised result it is impossible to speculate as to the problem.

Someone with more experience may be able to tell more thouhgh.

Are you pg? I had liver function tests in pregnancy to check for obstetric cholestasis (which I had).

Either way, British Liver Trust is helpful

If you are regular meds LFT's will tell GP if your liver is coping with the doseage

I had normal LFTs with chronic hepatitis, at times, but have had raised ALT (the usual ones they mention are ALT and ALS, though its true there are several others - its a range of tests) from a cold. Its very vague, your dr will probably want to repeat them and possibly do other tests.

Definitely worth following up, though - if you did have, for example, hepatitis of some sort, it could explain some of your symptoms (I answered your earlier post) and is treatable!

Good luck, its horrid going through the testing and waiting and not knowing, whatever the case.
