Day four of gastroenteritis after reheated rice and still feeling awful

I'm on day 4 of gastroenteritis, likely the result of eating warmed up rice. Since Sunday i've only managed to eat 4 bananas and one portion of porridge. I feel completely wiped out and the heat isn't helping. What can I do to get better? The doctor said they would see me after 5 days, if no improvement. I've hardly eaten anything but am managing sips of lucozade. Every time i've tried eating something i have horrendous diarrhoea within about 2 hours. I also feel nauseous (but haven't vomited) and my stomach hurts and cramps but that's not constant. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am really fed up with it and will try anything!

I posted above that rice sealed in nitrogen kills the spores of the bacteria on rice. But I have looked into it briefly and I am incorrect. Yes ready meals and rice pouches are sealed in nitrogen to replace oxygen but it does not kill the bacteria. It stops the bacteria from reproducing though. Interesting. I guess it means that reheating ready meal type rice is still something to avoid.
I would hazard a guess that the OP won’t be considering any rice for quite some time…

Rehydration tablets - i use berry flavoured ones. I mix up a 1 litre jug with 2 x tablets and put it in the fridge. It does help in this heat.

CCSS15 · 13/08/2026 22:21

Get dioralyte but make sure it isn't the 'relief' one as that has artificial sweetener in it

Also, order some charcoal tablets from amazon which will help

The most important thing is getting enough fluids. The rehydration sachets are horrid and I wouldn’t bother. Lucozade sport is much more palatable.

they used to recommend bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast, but now advice is to eat whatever you feel able to and avoid greasy and spicy foods.

Try and eat little and often, it will probably help with the cramps, too.

In this heat with diarrhoea it’s easy to dehydrate so really thinking about constant sipping and having ice lollies and things will help.

All for the brat diet usually but rice is probably the also thing OP wants to eat!

bpch · 13/08/2026 22:50

Oh wow I leave jambalaya to cool on the counter for ages before putting in the fridge, I won’t ever do again, I really hope you feel better soon OP.

Zorgothslugofdoom · 14/08/2026 01:18

Thank you to everyone who commented and gave suggestions. Will send DH out for diorylite in the morning. Am now also being sick, so will be calling the GP in the morning as am finding it hard to replace the fluids now it's coming out of both ends!

I have nothing but sympathy for you, op.

I ate reheated rice and it was worse than being in labour!

Absolutely excruciating. And when I saw it was rice, no-one believes me?!?

inkgirl · 14/08/2026 03:02

I had that when I was 18, it was awful the pain was unbearable, it was a case of just riding it out. Hope you feel better soon

FurForksSake · 14/08/2026 07:44

I’d call 111 for advice at this point. Don’t try to trick for 10-15 minutes after being sick, give your stomach a chance to settle before trying small amounts slowly.

I hope it passes soon!

coolcahuna · 14/08/2026 08:08

Just sending sympathy as food poisoning from rice is absolutely awful, sorry you're going through this

I find that black tea and black (burnt) toast can help - sips and eaten very slowly.

They used to give carbon for upset stomachs, I guess burned toast is just that.

WhatNextImScared · 14/08/2026 08:13

Coconut water is full of electrolytes

Omg l am really relaxed with stuff like this - never take notice of use by dates etc but think l will from now on. Wish you better op.

It’s specific to rice, keep overnight in the fridge and heat up properly. It is a
bacteria called Bascillus series, it produces a
toxin that makes you unwell
get well soon OP, if you feel like it’s worse today than a few days ago it may be worth a
phone call to your GP, it’s Saturday tomorrow so they’ll not be there

Megifer · 14/08/2026 08:19

Pepto bismol for the cramps. That disgusting pink slime is the best medication ever invented and it fixes everything the song says it does.

Hope you feel better soon op.

Lentilcakes · 14/08/2026 08:27

Usually takes a week to get over any stomach upset I’ve had. Recently had 24 hours of awful diarrhoea snd nausea and took me a week to not feel sick and to want to eat again.
I only had true gastroenteritis once as a teen - both ends, really ill - and it was a week then too.
just make sure you’re hydrated, that’s the most important thing. Doesn’t matter if you don’t eat for a few days really.

Lentilcakes · 14/08/2026 08:28

Also alkaline water like Actiph or Smart water has added electrolytes.

Bippitea · 14/08/2026 08:30

Every time we have a takeaway curry I reheat the curry & rice for my breakfast. 20 years and never gotten ill :/

Well done?

OP when I had gastroenteritis I was unwell for about 2 weeks, was awful. Hope you feel better soon.

My DH is prone to a bit of food poisoning, prawns in Spain, oysters in Kent, etc. the absolute worst food poisoning he had was from rice. About 7/8 days to fully recover. Dr will want sample of poo so maybe take it with you if they give u an appointment.

Came to say this. It tastes absolutely horrible, but it’s honestly a miracle medicine and works really fast. It’s great at helping nausea, too.

If you’re struggling to keep stuff down, I think they do Pepto tablets or chews. I’ve seen them in Boots, but have only tried the liquid.

I hope you feel better soon. I also find sipping on full sugar coke when sick does help a little and seems to be one of the few things I can tolerate.

I dont find the chews as good but they're alright to keep in the old handbag for heartburn.

I find raw onions set my stomach off something shocking, I wake up in the night with terrible labour like cramps. Dose of the pink stuff and its sorted within 30 mins. Best invention ever. Ive currently got 8 bottles stockpiled 😳

TheOtterly · 14/08/2026 08:41

It's not the reheating that's the problem it's the speed of cooling.
If you have spare rice after dishing up run it under the cold tap and straight in the freezer. If it's cooked quickly it's ok, don't leave it in the pan to cool down.

BCBird · 14/08/2026 09:23

I have never taken the warnings about reheating rice seriously OP. I will now OP. I hope u feel better soon. Hand hold

StormGazing · 14/08/2026 09:58

*Bascillus sereus… stupid iPhone

Asmallmystery · 14/08/2026 11:46

I am so sorry this happened to you, OP.

When DH had cancer he did aggressive chemo that weakened his immune system, and we dealt with many specialist doctors and nurses. At one extreme, some recommended against foods with shop bought mayonnaise and yoghurt, while at the other his ‘personal resource nurse’ - a wonderful guy - was very relaxed: ‘no raw fish or eggs’ ( or fish eggs).

The only thing they all agreed on was no leftover rice. We’d had no idea, but we have been binning it ever since.

Best wishes for a quick recovery.
