7 month old with diarrhoea

DS nearly 7 months has had diarrhoea for 4 days now. Watery/explosive nappies, everything literally going straight through him in less than 30 mins.

He seems fine in himself, other than a very sore bottom, but it doesn't seem to be clearing up on it's own. How long would you wait before thinking you needed to see GP?

Thanks

I would go to the doctors with him just to make sure he's ok- especially that he's not dehydrated. Can you take him tomorrow?

StrangeTown · 27/06/2008 21:06

Thanks Pinky. Didn't take him today, he seemed fine this morning, but everything is still going straight through. He has just woken up after an hour in bed crying which he rarely does. Think I will monitor it over the weekend and see how he gets on.

Doesn't sound good, although the fact he seems okay in himself is encouraging. Is he staying hydrated? That's the main thing.

If you have any doubts over the weekend, that's what NHS Direct, the Out of Hours service and your nearest Walk In Centre are for, don't hesitate to use them.

Yes, I will see how he is tomorrow and ring NHS if still going through him. I think he is OK hydration wise, will try and make sure he has a good BF in morning. Thanks

Have you been giving him diarolite? He'll be losing electrolytes so the diarolite will help to replace them. I would give NHS direct a call though. i hope he's feeling better soon.

andiem · 27/06/2008 21:55

ave he is bf so doesn't need dioralyte just bm

avenanap · 27/06/2008 21:56

No. I disagree. He does need diarolite to replace the electrolytes that ARE NOT IN BREAST MILK!

andiem · 27/06/2008 22:01

ave I think you will find that the royal college of pediatrics and child health giudelines state that bf infants should carry on doing just that and would only be supplemented with intravenous fluids not oral rehyaartion solutions. giving dioralyte would lead to the infant filling up with that and not taking bf which contains all the nutrients that the infant needs

Ses15 · 27/06/2008 22:04

If bm is going straight through then dioralyte will be worth considering. Normally would say anyone with diarrhoea for >48hrs should contact GP. Any signs of dehydration or temperature or worsening then conact duty doctor or NHS direct or pharmacist over the wkend.

andiem · 27/06/2008 22:08

ses the guidelines are quite clear and based on grade 1 evidence there is no benefit from oral rehydration fluids for bf infants
the advice for all patients with diarrhoea now adults and children is to eat a normal diet even if it doesn't stay in the system long
we would only use dioralyte for ff infants and only then as part of a prescribed rehydration regime for infants who are fairly dehydrated

Ses15 · 27/06/2008 22:10

Just my opinion and what I would do as I think it can only benefit. I understand you have the official guidelines though.....!

avenanap · 27/06/2008 22:13

They keep changing the bloody guidelines so much it's difficult to keep up! I'd go with the pharmasist myself though. the guidelines will be different in a month or so.
