I’d actually say the opposite - it was way more common to see children who had broken an arm / leg when I was at school than it seems to be now.

Possibly because playgrounds have become safer.

I was being facetious due to the goats thread title 🤭

Adrenal insufficiency- lots of people have developed it as a side effect of Covid. (I have Addisons which is a form of adrenal insufficiency and advise in an adrenal insufficiency group, we see it a lot now, there’s been a huge surge since Covid).

Parkinson’s, ALS, Cancer in people aged 50-60.

when I was a child
i only remember old people being sick and dying.

Obesity is the most noticeable one. When I was a child, there were very few obese people. There were a couple of boys in my primary school whom we all considered "fat" but by today's standards they would just be a bit overweight.

My mother used to talk about her mother being "too fat" and I remember her buying her mum a dress for her birthday in a size 18. That was in about 1971, when sizes had smaller measurements than they do today. I'm guessing an 18 is probably about 14 nowadays. My gran was quite tall, taller than my mum who was 5'3", so wasn't "fat" by today's standards.

Nowadays, from casual observation, it seems that about 75% of the adult population is either overweight or obese.

75%?? Give over.

Dementia/Alzheimers, old people like my gran were just said to be confused, and far fewer lived long enough for it to be common. Fibromyalgia, I first heard of it 20 years ago. But TB was more common, I was born in the 40s.

LubyLoo · 03/08/2026 15:41

Molluscum contagiosum.

sunshinesuperwomsn · 03/08/2026 15:42

Asthma, eczema, herpes, chlamydia, nut allergy.

iloveanearlynight · 03/08/2026 15:43

Primary hyperparathyroidism.

OnePoisedPanda · 03/08/2026 16:06

Crohns. I’m very grateful that there’s been more research into it, when my grandmother was diagnosed she’d already had her appendix and womb removed because they thought it could be to do with that, if she was diagnosed today she may have not had to undergo so many unnecessary surgeries

I’ve also got primary Addisons and agree with this . When my late mum was diagnosed with Addisons in 1966 it was extremely rare .

Excellent response , thank you

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 03/08/2026 16:15

Sarcoidosis
When I was diagnosed, I'd never heard of it, didn't know anyone who had heard of it.
Now I know four people with it, and met plenty who have at least heard of it.

ADHD, everyone wants to be diagnosed with it these days, it’s ridiculous.

No, ignorant opinions like this are ridiculous.

75%?? Give over.

66% according to NHS figures so not far off...

In 2024, 30% of adults aged 16 and over were living with obesity, and 66% were either overweight or living with obesity. The prevalence of overweight (including obesity) was more common among men (70%) than women (62%).

OvernightBloats · 03/08/2026 16:17

Digestive problems - diverticulitis, IBS, Crohns
Parkinsons
Allergies
Obesity
Diabetes

Remtada · 03/08/2026 16:36

Long covid is an obvious one. Is it now the number one chronic illness in children, overtaking asthma? Increase in illnesses that covid triggers - e.g. ME, POTS, diabetes, heart attacks.

I don’t know if breast cancer is more common or just caught through better screening. I know half a dozen women in their forties who have had/are having treatment for it in the last six years.

People are more aware of some conditions e.g. ADHD although I understand it is still massively underdiagnosed.

I agree with this. My Mum (who died aged 71 in 2019) was diagnosed with Crohn’s at age 11 and it was virtually unheard of. No one knew how to manage it, she was basically given some steroids and told it was growing pains and she’d probably grow out of it (!!) she had so many surgeries over the years, leading to her having only half her bowel left as an adult. It’s so different for people nowadays, still very debilitating obviously but there is so much more knowledge and support than there used to be.

How about being thankful that you're not someone who has gone their whole life thinking something is wrong with them, pretending to be like their friends to it in because science based an entire disorder on the narrow representation of young males so they slipped through the cracks and spent decades being misdiagnosed with mental health issues instead?

Empathy costs nothing, hun.

Ignorance costs the people you dismiss so easily, though.

JustSawJohnny · 03/08/2026 17:00

Stomach issues, obesity related diseases and Auto Immune Diseases.

IMO, mostly due to the prevalence of ultra processed foods in our diets.

fosterma · 03/08/2026 17:14

Severe allergies, my sister and cousin (both now 65) is anaphylactic allergic to fish, shellfish, peanuts and other nuts. We didn't know of anyone who was the same for a long time, now seems much more prevalant

Also, asthma - I was one of only a few at school

Agree with every word of this.

When I was growing up I didn’t hear of anyone’s health conditions unless they were a family member or friend as there was no internet so for me every health condition is more common now. Most Id never heard of until I heard/read about it usually online

ChalkOutlines · 03/08/2026 17:59

Asthma, allergies, type 1 diabetes, eczema, a lot of autoimmune conditions, various types of cancer etcz
