strange rash appearing all over dd! what should I do?

dd is 23m she has no fever but is alseep (which since she has dropped her nap happily is unusual.) The rash looks like insect bites and is on her face, arms, legs and torso, there are about 20 spots so far. she also has one very red cheek.

I'm panicing as I'm disabled and I'm in the rare situation of being completly without backup as parents and dh are all away. So. I'm panicking! do I need to try to get her to a doctor?

anyone have any ideas what it might be? from googling my lead contenders are chicken pox and slap cheek but the spots don't have heads like the pics I've seen of chick pox and the rash is all over and slap cheek should start on the face.....

Sorry she's not well sticky. Can you call NHS 24 or whatever you have in your area. If you explained the situation they might be able to arrange for someone to come out and see her?

DD had a viral rash at 4mo that sounds a little like this. She never developed a fever or anything, and if it hadn't been for the rash, I wouldn't have known there was anything wrong with her.

She's had it twice since. Is your local GP surgery understanding of your situation? Will the GP come out?

itati · 26/06/2008 15:36

Can you post a pic so we can have a look? My daughter has had chicken pox and slapped cheek so I have seen it before.

funnypeculiar · 26/06/2008 15:37

Heat rash a possibility?
Has she been at all unwell? (Mine have both recently had post viral rashes very similar to this that developed about 48 hours after temperatures)

My dts have just had chicken pox and that started off as red spots on face, head and torso, didn't blister until 2 days later.

Do the glass test to reassure yourself and ring the Dr.

FrazzledFairyFay · 26/06/2008 15:41

Do you have any friendly neighbours who could take you down to the GP? Whereabouts are you - maybe a mumsnetter could help?

My philosophy is always better safe than sorry so I'd take her to the GP/out of hours doc (or get them to come to you) or call NHS Direct for advice.

BibiThree · 26/06/2008 15:41

Drs have telephone appointments available if you ask, and if they need to see her and you can't get her there they should come out.

EmmyLou · 26/06/2008 15:53

Sounds like chiken pox to me. We're in the middle of it atm and neither dd2 or dd3 have been particularly ill with it - just itchy.

It's better to see a DR though - it needs to be on child's record if it is CPox.

lou031205 · 26/06/2008 16:27

My DD had slapped cheek a fortnight ago (rash still present), and it started on face and arms, then spread to legs & torso. Bright red cheek only appeared on day 2.

Amandella · 26/06/2008 16:37

somethingsticky - have you done the glass test?? Sounds to me like the beginning of chicken pox - they don't crust over for a few days usually so it could be that...but not worth taking the risk. Do the glass test and call NHS direct. Let us know how you are doing.

somethingsticky · 26/06/2008 17:02

yes I did the glass test and it seemed ok but it woke her. she is very very clingy, and therefore making it v difficult to get back to pc. but still no temp. feel silly for not ringing gp but apart from rash she seems ok... will ring now before its too late....

Amandella · 26/06/2008 17:08

if the glass test is OK then I'm sure it's a virus, heatrash or chicken pox. Good idea to ring the docs though - will at the very least put your mind at rest... let us know how you get on.

somethingsticky · 26/06/2008 17:36

missed the doc by 1 min. i feel so silly waiting all afternoon then calling after they shut. I've just sorted her some tea. I'd been so busy panicking and starting with a migraine I forgot to make her tea!! she went into kitchen and pointed up at worktops and said yesh pweese She's eating fine so thats a good sign.

she had an ear infection last week, just finished her ABs this morning....

the other odd thing is that she is insisting on wearing her coat and shoes! could be that she is feeling cold, could be that she wants to go and see her grandad (she will have a long walk, they are in Madeira)

going to call NHS direct.

just reread the posts now I have a bit more time, thanks so much for the offer of help notjustm! I've got a neighbour on standby so we are OK thanks.

NHS direct think self care is OK as she has no temperature, If she gets any worse though I will be bothering them again

cpox spots don't have heads to begin with.

somethingsticky · 26/06/2008 22:44

I'm in yorkshire. but should I ever be down your way....

I've dragged a teacher friend round to see dd's rash and she dosen't think it looks like chicken pox crosses fingers dd was perky and full of the joys of spring this evening thanks to her afternoon nap. she didn't even start to slow down until gone 8. from her behaviour I really don't think she is really poorly. the piriton I gave her seemed to fade the rash alot so here's hoping it is just heat/allergy. Thanks everyone for being around when I was havving a stressfest!

the rash got much worse overnight so I took her to the gp first thing this morning. he thinks its an allergic reaction to the amoxocillin that she had for the ear infection. she is pretty miserable but not infectious so at least I can take her out if I can find somewhere that she isn't going to scare people

thanks again for everyone's help and virtual hand holding!
