You can get seasonal asthma with hayfever - call the doctor!

trace2 · 25/06/2008 18:26

yes i thought that he wont let me call

My DS has asthma only when the hay fever season is on and has inhalers for it. Blue and brown ones. This week he has been quite bad and needed them for the first time this season.

His GP should be able to prescribe them.

avenanap · 25/06/2008 18:28

Asthma. Can be very dangerous. I would take him to A&E or even better, call an ambulance. Is he able to talk to you without stopping for a breath?

littlerach · 25/06/2008 18:29

I had an inhaler when I was in my early 20s.

it was horrids when I felt I couldn't breathe.

Okay if he won't let you call.. get him to shower.. including washing his hair and face well to get rid of all pollen..
close windows to help stop pollen coming into house.
Then ring NHS direct up.
DH won't ever let me call anyone.. and my ploy on this is " oh just have a chat to NHS direct.. and see what they say.. as I may be being over causious".. works like a treat and they will help you from there.

avenanap · 25/06/2008 18:40

Don't bother with NHS Direct. If he's having any problems breathing they will automatically send an ambulance. Is he wheezing and is he able to talk to you without stopping for breaths?

trace2 · 25/06/2008 18:44

thank you hes ok now its passed hes at gp tomorrow but if oit happens again tonight i am ringing out of hours doc we just had a scare,

forever cleaning - my son is the same - the forst two weeks in June are ghastly - today he only needed on piriton -yeaaaay!.
Trace - f it happens again PLEASE take him to A&E - I did not relaise how serious it can be when unitl DH took DS to the doc two years ago when he was in a similar state - the doc immediately put him on a nebuliser, and said if he was gasping for breath we should immedialty go to A&E, or call ambulance - do not waste time with NHS direct!

forevercleaning · 25/06/2008 19:27

hi MrsGuyof - yes, its really awful. I didnt know much about asthma and just thought he was suffering extra bad hayfever a couple of years ago until I took him to the doc and they gave him steroids, and the peak flow monitor hardly moved!

I am very careful now, he has daily piriton, and eye drops, but this week has been gasping into the inhaler. It happens so quickly, it must be taken seriously. Great to know your DS is not so bad at the moment though.

misdee · 25/06/2008 19:38

trace2, if it happens again then do call ambulance. asthma kills.

sorry if that harsh, but asthma is a serious condition that shouldnt be messed about with. have two dd's with it, and regularly have to see them struggling to breathe and its scary. that little inhaler is a lifesaver.

trace2 · 25/06/2008 19:39

thnk you have shown dh this hes been in shower still weezing alittle the meds for hayfever not touching him at moment

OP posts:
misdee · 25/06/2008 19:41

if he is still wheezing then take him to out of hours now. dont leave it.

Trace - I'm back online for now, not sure if it will last. You know i get asthma with hayfever, make him go to the docs, hayfever tablets won't touch it at all and it won't go away. I put up with it for a while cos i didn't know what it was and was shocked when the doc said asthma.

Fimbles5 · 26/06/2008 09:46

trace2 - Get him to the doctors. I have been putting off seeing a doctor for a week, but have felt like someone has been sitting on my chest, and nightimes have been terrible struggling to breathe. Relented yesterday and saw doctor only to be prescribed steroid inhaler. Doctor was very adamant that any breathing problems, even as in my case I felt were only related to hayfever, must be treated immediately. Sending my sympathy - I know how he must be feeling.

trace2 · 26/06/2008 11:11

hi all hes ben to docs, hea gave him two inhalers, a brown one and a blue heas to carry round all the time.

once again thank you
