Fostair inhalers have to be kept below 25C, how do you do that and carry them with you in a heat wave?

There's a thing called a frio wallet that my son uses for keeping his insulin cool in hot weather. It's activated by water and stays cool for a long time.

Use a cool pouch, you can get decent ones from £20 on Amazon. I use mine for multiple medications.

IOP, It only needs to be kept at that temperature before opening. Its fine to keep it at room temperature ( even in a heatwave) after opening.

Not so. Before use it should be stored in a fridge at 2 - 8 degrees, after that it should not be allowed to go above 25 degrees.

I have been on Fostair for years as part of my asthma management plan. I have never been told to ensure that it is kept at a certain temperature. Mine lives in a dark, closed cupboard in a well ventilated bathroom.

This is definitely anecdata, but experience has proven that without a precenter inhaler, my asthma would hit crisis level several times a year. I haven't had a major issue for years, so my Fostair appears to be doing the job from its cupboard. The room is quite cool, but I do nothing special and my Fostair works.

Whaaaaat?? Mine has been sweating away next to me on my bedside table in a 30° room. Whoops.

Does it become less effective or something?

Snap, although I keep in fridge until first use as the pharmacy always get it out their fridge.

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 03/07/2026 22:50

Ask the pharmacist, they may have recommendations of what to use to keep fostair or any other products cool

drspouse · 03/07/2026 22:50

Our bedroom doesn't get above 25° though I actually didn't know this!

MrsWembley · 03/07/2026 22:54

Nope, only in the fridge until you start using it. Then fine in the bathroom cupboard. Honestly, I checked with the pharmacist when I started using them!

Yes, that is what is says on the information leaflet.

The product leaflet disputes this. Unless your bathroom cupboard is below 25C which mine usually is, but it definitely wasn’t in the heat wave last week!

So has mine ! But then I read the following and started to wonder about storing it in a heat wave! “When Fostair is exposed to temperatures above 25°C, its active ingredients can degrade, reducing its therapeutic effectiveness. Prolonged heat also causes the pressurized propellant to expand, which can alter the medication dose per actuation”

I keep mine in the door inside the fridge even after opening I just get it out, use it and put it back in fridge. If I go out for day I take it with me. On very hot day I put it in handbag with a cool pack.

britneyisfreebutnotokay · 04/07/2026 01:07

Shit. Knew none of this. Reason one million and one of why I love mumsnet!

chattyness · 04/07/2026 01:14

I use this one & I was only told by pharmacist to keep it in the fridge before opening and mine have always worked That being said it rarely gets above 25 up here, especially not this year, while you've been enjoying/suffering the heat wave it's been wet and windy & not very warm for us.

CookingFatCat · 04/07/2026 01:19

What am I reading!! I had no idea of any of this.

CookingFatCat · 04/07/2026 01:20

I use an online pharmacy, another reason why I think it’s rubbish. There’s no advice, just medication in the post.
