Referred to dermatology after new mole, does this always mean concern?

Ok need calming down a little or a lot. My DH noticed a new mole on his arm. He went to see the doctor and he said he didn’t like the look of it and referred him to dermatology. He went last Tuesday and he didn’t really see anyone just had teledermatology photo done and left. Today he’s received an appointment for 2 weeks time to see the Dermatologist. Does this mean it’s definitely bad 😞 has this happened to anyone else and it turned out to be ok? I feel sick with worry.

It happened to my friend recently. She had one on her face. It's precancerous and she's been given chemotherapy cream.

No, it’s fine, I’ve had several moles referred to dermatology. Always on the 2 week pathway. I’ve had several cut out and several were left. Biopsies on the ones cut out have always been no further action.

I had a new one on my face a few years ago. I was referred to the hospital, they did a scrape biopsy and I got the results through a couple of weeks after that. It was a basal cell carcinoma, nothing to worry about and it hasn't come back.

I had a scab the size of a cigarette burn for a while but as it was during the time when we were all still wearing facemasks, DH was the only one who knew! It actually healed up really quickly.

Hope it's similar for your DH. I know it's easier said than done but please don't worry.

I got the referral after the photo. Saw the consultant and she said she wanted it gone. They took it off and results came back benign.

Sometimes they can't decide based on the photo and need a look . It's not always bad news.

I’ve had a couple cut out and sent away. Both fine so doesn’t always mean it’s bad x

I got referred for one on my leg they literally looked at it for 15 seconds and went your fine. Spent 2 weeks thinking I had skin cancer

I had this last year. The GP mentioned two kinds of cancer which terrified me. I was referred on the cancer pathway. Dermatologist took one look and said ‘It’s not cancer. It could be in the future if we leave it but we will give you some cream and it will go.’ I had a red patch for a few weeks and now nothing. I’m about to go about another mole (I have freckly skin!) but even if they refer me this time I won’t be too worried.

DH has been 3 times with brown marks, each via the two week wait as the GP either didn't know what it was or the dermatology dept. wanted a closer look having seen the photo. Each time it was benign.
I was referred under 2ww when I got a new brown mole, irregular shaped with black dots in. I was frantic with worry. The consultant said she wanted a biopsy and said that if she thought it was serious she'd warn me there and then, but she just wanted to 100% rule out cancer. I had a painless biopsy then got a letter telling me it was a benign naevus.

Thank you so much for sharing all your experiences with me. Its really made me a lot calmer. I didn’t realise it was so common. I’m so relieved everyones experience turned out well in the end. It looks like its a bit of a waiting game before finding out. I’ll try to stay off google and try not to think of the worse case scenario.

I think they are super cautious which is good. Mine is a ‘wait and see’. I have to go back in 3 months to see if it’s grown more or changed shape. So sometimes they just want a closer look.

I've been referred on 2ww twice this year to dermatology.
The first was biopsied and was not cancer. The second one the dermatologist looked at it for 5 seconds and said that's a BCC. She burned it off there and then with liquid nitrogen. It seems to have healed well but I have to go back after three months to check. Apparently they often repeat the procedure if in doubt.
