Life without a gallbladder

4 years ago I said goodbye to my gallbladder. 3.5 years ago I said hello to BAD. Only 1.5 years ago through my own research did I discover that was what it was and asked (begged) my GP for Cholestryamine. It definitely helped. But recently it’s not quite working as well. I have a burning pressure like feeling on my right side, sometimes differed shoulder pain and some toilet accidents. Yellow poo is back long term again and I need to be near a loo. I’ve been taking 1 sachet at night. I’ve been having a few swallowing issues and was fast tracked for a gastroscopy last Friday. That was fun (not!) This test discovered polyps, a small hernia and excess bile acid surprise surprise. They took lots of photos and some biopsies. I don’t remember much of what was said due to sedation but the consultant recommended I take my omeprazole on a morning an hour before food. I’m giving that a try. I taste bile acid frequently now, I’m sure that is what’s causing my silly cough and swallowing problems. As far as I know I’ve been discharged. I’m going to try and increase the Cholestryamine to see if that helps. Anyone else found things getting worse after sort of being settled?

I’m sorry if this seems like a hijack! A polyp was found in my gallbladder a few months ago after a liver ultrasound. My Gp asked if I’d had any pain or acid and I had had a little. She put through a surgical referral for me to have it taken out and also increased my Omeprazole. What is BAD?

BAD is bile acid diarrhoea sometimes known as BAM which is bile acid malabsorption.

Thanks OP, I wish you all the best of luck Flowers

I've suffered with this for years. Used the meds but didn't like it. I control it with Immodium and Peptobismol. I take lots of extra vitamins. Also can get acid reflux at times. Since I've lost weight it's been better. Have you had the sehcat test done?

Did you find that the Cholestryamine worked well when it did. I had a consultation with a gastroenterologist they are going to prescribe this but the Dr's still hasn't sorted it out yet even though this was on the 16th June. Have you had a sehcat scan I had the capsule on Friday and have to have the scan on Friday. I am being sent for this as I have diarrhoea almost straight after eating. So I never eat outside the house now. I am also going to have a colonoscopy. I have also had my gallbladder out.

For the last year Cholestryamine has worked well. Not so good now though. I’ve not had the scan.

What do you mean by silly cough?

I had my gallbladder out and have had a cough since. Put it down to hay-fever. If I laugh my cough is awful.

shellyleppard · 29/06/2026 17:22

@OohOohOohWahAhh its bile acid diarrhea

I'm very careful with my diet post surgery. Fatty foods, chocolate, peanuts, some white bread, all brown bread. I take omeprazole, acidex at night. Yes that cough is annoying. The gallbladder pain is odd.

Go back to your GP if it's out of control again.
