Neutropenia- spiralling, advice welcomed

I had a routine blood test and it's come back with a white blood cell count of 3.1, neutrophils of 1.2 and MCHC of 355. All others values were in the normal range.
The GP called me to say that they will be urgently referring me to a haematologist as I'm neutropenic and they need to understand the underlying cause. A quick Google has petrified me. The GP was pretty frightening too and talking about if I'm at all unwell to go straight to hospital as I'm at risk of neutropenic sepsis.
Any advice or experiences welcomed. X

Are you on any medication or have any health issues, rrcent illness? why did you need a routine bloodtest. That must have worried you,did the GP arrange a repeat test or to see you.

It’s easier said than done, but please try not to panic.

Those levels aren’t dangerously low, and the most common cause of slight neutropaenia is a recent viral infection. Have you had anything like that?

The onward referral is likely to entail a further blood test called a blood film which looks in more detail at the cells themselves, as well as other tests if needed.

Good luck!

Try not to worry. I’m neutropenic and have been for over 15 years now. I was 0.3 at diagnosis and they sent me straight to haematology the same day my bloods were done
i was diagnosed with autoimmune neutropenia and put on GCSF but I have come off it after 10 years due to side effects. I hover between 0.5-1

haematology did more bloods over a period of time and mine went off to Bristol for a specific antibody tests. I had 2 positive antibody tests so they diagnosed from that

I do ask people not to come over/near me if they’re unwell, I get my flu jab and I avoid doctors waiting rooms and a&e!

I was flagged as neutropenic with similar (actually slightly worse) results. The haematology department have protocols for recalling and retesting within certain parameters and that can be extremely frightening but it does not mean there is definitely anything sinister or serious.
My next test came back completely normal and hopefully yours will too. It is a worry though. My GP told me not to travel and stay within easy reach of a hospital in the event of sepsis which was sensible but rather worrying at the time.

Thank you for the reassuring replies.
It was just the routine bloods that my surgery call my age group (early 40s) in for.
No recent illness or meds, which is fuelling the worry 😔

Neutropenic, no known underlying cause. Actually, not just neutrophils, but all my white blood cells are below normal threshold. I try to stay away from sick people especially ones displaying signs of respiratory infections as this is what I really struggle with. Annual testing to see if the values are remaining stable ie my normal. Advised not to receive live vaccines and to contact GP is really struggling with an infection.

I’m technically neutrophenic, and have been for years. My results are a little worse than yours. I’ve had issues with tingling feet and hands so was seen by a neurologist and rheumatologist but nothing was found. My tingling comes and goes and isn’t that bad. I’m otherwise healthy, I am fit and I don’t tend to get ill. If I do I recover quickly. I’m older than you.
I was under the belief that some people just have low white blood cells and neutrophils. I do normal things to keep myself healthy such as eating well and making sure I sleep well and excessive. I don’t do those things because of having low white blood cells and neutrophils though.
It’s good that the Doctor has referred you urgently as then you should get your answers quickly.
