Lee gave me a scare today.. he has been ill for a couple of days really niggly crying alot and just not him. Then at lunch time today he was the same.. (he has also been moaning like we would when in pain) I picked him up he clung to me then all of a sudden stoppped crying and started to violently shiver!!, I called my neighbour to come over and look at him with me as I was sure his face was blue tinged!!, she came in looked at him and said..Karen his hands and fet are blue!!! I handed him to her, picked up the ohione ran in the garden and hsouted my other neighbour, who came running straight round.. looked at lee handed him to me and saidget in the car.. I was histerical!!! we sped to the med centre adn all the drs where oon lunch but the receptioninst looked at me and said hold on I will get someone.. In the car Lees colour had come back but he was very quiet and dazed like.

They took us to the nurses station, they looked at him and took his temp whilst i was saying what had happened and he had a temp of 39.4 by ear.

Dr checkedhim and a rash was appearing on his chest before our eyes.. luckily this was dissapearing when pressed.. Dr checked lee for stiff joints, but by now lee had perked up and was smiling slightly at him and trying to grab him. His throat ears tummy etc were all checked and nothing.... SO it has been put down to a viral infection.. he blueness has been put down to his temp spiking to fast..30mins after the ibrufen his temo was down to 38.4. so we could come home.

He has been on and off all afternoon.. But silly me just looked up the symptoms ionline.. big mistake as they aare alot of the symptoms of the big M.... I know it was silly to look this up but I have never heard of a child going blue througha temP!!!!

I will keep checking him through the night though as I have got myself into a panik,, bless him..

Why would a sudden temp increase make his extemities turn blue!!!

Hmm. My ds had this when he was a baby with a fever, they were blue. I think it's because the heat is circulating around the body in an attempt to kill the virus/bacteria. The hands and feet don't matter as much in the great scheme of things. The bady is designed to protect the vital organs first, this is why people with scepticimia often have limbs amputated. Just an opinion though.

Yes, sometimes with a 'rigor' or sudden rise in temperature causing shivering, a child can appear very pale, sometimes with a bluish tinge. However sensible to keep checking him regularly.

my ds was ill when he was about 10months. He went for a sleep and woke screaming. I felt his forehead and it was like FIRE (never felt skin so hot) His temp was 40. Stripped him off, gave him meds and sponged him down but was ready to go hairing to hosp. dp was a bit more relaxed about it . called gp's and nhs direct. got a pretty quick response and they talked me through it, checking temp manically. His skin developed a purple blotching all over, I felt sick. It did fade when pressed but it just looked so strange. Was in between calls etc and was assured that it was ok (still wanted to do manic rush to hosp) That was the peak of his illness/temp and after that gradually improved but he was all lethargic and almost groany. Worried me sick. (This was all in the evening so couldn;t do a dash to surgery)

You did the best thing. They frighten the life out of you don;t they? Just take him back if you are worried, it doesn't matter if you think you're being paranoid, gp's are used to it! How old is he?

Oh and ds did the shiver thing to, I still get scared when I think about it even though it was all ok.
