Gastroscopy sedation experiences

I’ve had a last min appointment booked for tomorrow morning. I’ve put off mentioning problems because I don’t want the camera. I struggle to cope at the dentist, I’m very sensitive and gaggy. The spray alone or conscious sedation doesn’t sound enough. I will fight them I know. The lady on the phone mentioned fentanyl. Do you think this will be enough?
Im asking for your experiences really and suggestions. I just want to get it over and done with. I have had some past trauma which I think has lead to me feeling like this.
I only saw the GP yesterday about it so I’m really grateful to be offered this so quickly. But I’m also very anxious.

Waiting to go in, they only do the spray or conscious sedation

Then tell them that. I need to be properly sedated as I won’t consent to any form of pinning down or restraint which is criminal assault without my consent.

This - I also had both procedures last week. I insisted on full sedation and female staff present at both times. I wish you well

I hope it goes OK for you.

I’m home and have had a couple of hours sleep. Woke up still feeling very tired and groggy. The staff were lovely, they couldn’t have been any more welcoming and that really put me at ease. I think the all female staff doing the procedure helped, I was lucky, (I do struggle with male dentists)
It wasn’t something I’d like to do again but I think I could. I felt a big need to swallow often and that was uncomfortable against the tube. I’ve got quite a sore throat now. They found several polyps and took biopsies from different areas and my gullet. I have a hernia and lots and lots of acid. I need to reconsider when I take my omeprazole. So I’ve got to wait for the pathology results but I don’t think there’s was anything obviously wrong. Not sure why I have swallowing issues, maybe all that acid causes irritation. I’ve got some paperwork to read about it all when I’m more with it. Not sure when the effects of sedation should clear.

Really glad you got through it.

Can I ask please, I'm due this soon and the info leaflet said the endoscopist tells you straight after the procedure what they saw. If I was sedated, would someone talk me through the visual results before I went home?

Glad to hear the staff were supportive op and I wish you all the best for your results

Just after the procedure they told me a few things that they had seen, before I was wheeled out to recovery I could see the consultant looking through all the photos she’d taken. They said I would be given the report just before I leave and they did. Someone went through it all and I could ask questions. It was really clearly explained and a map marked out with what was found and where. Just got to wait a few days for the biopsy results. The sedation wasn’t that deep but just enough to make you feel a bit disconnected from what was happening. You can breathe fine during it and if you focus on that you will be fine.

That's so reassuring, thank you! I was worried about sedation but from your experience it doesn't sound too bad. I think it's the swallowing that's panicking me.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 27/06/2026 20:25

I’ve had two…both with conscious sedation. It was really easy and I have absolutely NO memory of what happened. They told me I’d been ‘very cooperative’ throughout though, so I’m glad I didn’t say or do anything embarrassing 😂😂

To add…the first one I had been encouraged to try with just the throat spray…which I did try but I had a panic attack and just couldn’t continue with it. They then did the sedation, which was a breeze.

I would definitely have this again 👌🏻

In my experience it’s definitely been one of those things that in reality was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be.

My DS was given a brief report on Tuesday. Apparently he was asked if he wanted them to talk him through it all but he went 'Nah, you're OK' because he wanted to get something to eat and drink 🙄
