Feet swelling the heat

This, basically. I have a sedantary job and maybe not the best chair when WFH. There was one summer a few years ago where I noticed my left foot had got quite swollen after working all day at my desk but in this current heatwave it’s happening every day. I’m getting up and moving as regularly as I can and propping my feet up at the end of the day. I have some weight to lose (10-15kg) - could it be making worse? Not sure why my left foot is worse than my right one, either.

is there anything I can do to minimise this happening? Also perimenopausal and on HRT if that helps.

Elasticated stockings or keeping your feet elevated on a couple of pillows at night? Is it sore or red looking?? Could be cellulitis. But my feet swell really bad with this hot weather too

I don't think swelling ankles feet are an even process. My right ankle is fine. My left ankle a little swollen. I've had two new hips in the last eight months, now the swelling was off the charts the first time. I was getting up to pee during the night because my body was trying to get rid of it. Look at your feet in the morning are they normal?

I was told to get up every hour during the day move around to reduce the extra fluid faster. Not ideal in the heat we're having.

I used to get swollen feet at work in hot weather so I used to spritz them with cold water as often as possible. It made them feel better and eased the swelling a bit. The only way to solve the problem properly is to keep your feet as high as possible. Could you put a footstool with a pillow on under your desk?

EBearhug · 24/06/2026 23:12

Mine improved after getting my blood pressure down to normal.

Sounds like your circulatory system are struggling a little. Definitely lose the weight, aim for 10000 steps a day, or 30 minutes of heart raising exercise as many times a week as possible -
avoid saturated fats, sugary drinks etc - eat well -
you don’t want this to continue x x wish you the best

Thank you all! My left has a little swelling left this morning but mostly normal. @justasking111i wouldn’t say they get sore but when I do stand up I can feel something going on around my ankles - almost like pins and needles but not quite. I’ll try and get up on my feet a lot more today.

@YellowpapersunI’ll try the stool under the desk, thank you.

@EBearhugI last had my blood pressure taken in November and it was really good - then again I’ve recently put on some weight I can’t really explain so I might get it checked again.

Are you hyper mobile? I am low end of normal weight and my feet swell in the heat due to hyper mobility, I actually get low blood pressure in the hot weather.
Drinking a lot of water and making sure I have electrolytes helps a lot.
Mines worse since having children it’s like all my connective tissue forgot to retighten after pregnancy including vascular.

glowfrog · 26/06/2026 13:23

I don’t believe I am hypermobile. That sounds really uncomfortable.

Drink plenty of water and take magnesium. If mine start to swell I make a point of drinking a glass of water an hour for a day and take some magnesium tablets and they go back to normal. The temptation is to drink less but actually your body needs to know there is plenty of water so that it doesn’t store it up,

I sympathise, with me it’s my hands. I end up with sausage fingers and prominent veins - lovely!

Settlersa · 26/06/2026 13:59

DH gets it in his hands, he likes walking long distances and apparently it's having your hands down in hot temperatures causes it. I think you have to raise the bit that swells as much as you can. hopefully be cooler next week

BellaDinge · 26/06/2026 14:03

Yes I get it too. Take your electrolytes, apply horse chestnut gel, put a cushion under your feet, raise them when you can! It’s happened to me in hot weather for years now. The gel is a godsend. Keep hydrated.. coconut water is good. Supposedly it will be cooler next week.

theyawnicorn · 27/06/2026 09:15

Exactly the same issue here, hot weather this week and my left foot is swollen and feels very tight, right foot flat as a pancake! Only ever happens in hot weather..hasn’t happened since my holiday last summer!

my blood pressure is fine (test regularly). I just don’t understand why it’s the left foot only!

Scooby2024 · 28/06/2026 12:39

I get it on my left foot only. Have some weight to shift though. Elevate and drink lots of water
