My poor darling baby has got Hand, Foot and Mouth

Well to be honest he is 3 but he's still my baby IYNWIM.

He was a bit off colour yesterday and slept most of the afternoon when i got him up he was covered in a rash from the waist down so i rang the doctors (in headless chicken mode)and was advised to take him to A&E.

So we raced down there and after a number of checks and questions i was told it was hand, foot and mouth and it comes from the same vierious (sp?) as chicken pox it had been going round nursery but i didn't think much of it as DS had it as a baby.

So roll on to today and i ring nursery to let them know and ask if they want the signs and symptons to let the other parent know and get "No is alright we already know from" then the staff member stops changes subjet and suddenly has to go

The most important thing though is that my poor DS has blisters in his mouth and can't eat anything even though he is hungary. He was even sobbing uncontrolabley in pain when he tryed to eat a banana So he has had ice-cream for breakfast and yougarts for dinner, i tryed whip and mashed up banana even jared baby pudding but he won't eat any.

The only other 'soft' thing i can think to give him is soup, so if anyone has any advice or any idears on what i could give him to eat they would be gratefully recived!

Thank you

Calpol a while before eating helped my DD1 when she had it. And just eating ice lollies/ice cream/yoghurts too. The sore mouth will go in a few days so i wouldn't worry about food too much.

ds2 had this a while ago. He wouldnt even drink. hospital said if he didnt drink soon they'd have to put a drip or sumthin in. He drank a carton of juice and was sent home. He didnt eat for few days but soon chirped up and was fine.

It is very contagious though so does go around nurseries easily. My ds had it and I caught it too. I remebr really painful palms on my hands as though they were being oinced. Didn't last too long though - hope he feels better soon.

I mean 'pinched'

jumpingbeans · 24/06/2008 14:21

Ahh bless him, will he eat jelly?

Romy7 · 24/06/2008 14:23

all 3 of mine have had it - it does go quite quickly but is a bit of pita.

load up with calpol and distract him with the telly.

the whole nursery'll have it within the week anyway!

Romy7 · 24/06/2008 14:25

that said - i think it has changed a bit over the last couple of years - the most recent newish strain we had was the whole arms and legs one - v odd, they're going to have the change the name of it!

My 18 month old has it at the mo too so you have my sympathies. She ended up covered in the rash, dribbling like a 3 month old from the mouth ulcers and generally very poorly. On top of it all she now has conjunctivitis so three times a day I have to pin her down for eye drops.

She also picked it up from nursery, and has no doubt spread it around a fair bit as well as she went for mon/tues/weds/thurs last week with rash and dribbling as she was well in herself until Thursday afternoon when the fever came.

Thank you all so much, the thought that he should hopfully be over the worst of it in a few days has put my mind at rest a bit. I am lucking in the fact that he will drink however i will try and get even more down him.

I have been giving him calpol but compleatly forgot it took 20-30 minutes to work bless his little heart i've given it every 4 hours but only left it 10 minutes or so before offering something else to eat.

I will try the jelly and keep up the ice-cream and yougarts.

Thank you again.

Goingslowlymad i hope your DD is feeling better soon!

I know what you mean about being well in herself my DS just seemed a bit more tired than useal so i sent him to nursery as he was still up and running around and have been sat here feeling guilty for sending him yesterday morrning ever since, even though the doctor said he'd more than likely been incobating it since thursday.
