Has anyone seen this before?

Has anyone seen this before and had a biopsy or tests on it?
My dermatologist said it is remotely unlikely to be melanoma but I am so scared ahead of the biopsy.

Any reassurance would be a great help or if anyone has seen this before and it's been okay.

Apparent Leukonychia (Muehrcke's lines): Paired horizontal white lines that do not move as the nail grows, and temporarily disappear when you press on the nail bed. These typically signal low protein (albumin) levels in your blood, often associated with kidney issues, liver disease, or malnutrition.

Mine is more of a light brown line xx

I have this on both my thumbnails and it’s just a band of pigment

I only have it on one thumbnail and as it's the one I use the most which can be a worrying sign I just over think it. Did you have a biopsy hun? Xxx

I have a line on my toenail (it also spilts) that I was referred to the clinic for. The said it was definitely not melanoma and was caused by something damaging the nail bed

AnnaMagnani · 17/06/2026 22:57

Flowers to you OP. Treatment for breast cancer is light years different now to the past. As is treatment for skin cancer.

I hope you can find a way to damp down your cancer fears and remember the love of your mum without the overwhelming pain.

Sorry also did you have a biopsy hun? Xx

Yes also on the thumb. Didn’t have a biopsy. I was seen initially and then 3 months later. It hadn’t changed in colour or size. If it had then it would have needed a biopsy.

Aw okay bless you, yeah mine hasn't changed in colour or size so wasn't sure whether to have a biopsy myself what's your opinion? Also did the dermatologist that looked at it say it's a benign mole to you? Xxxx

The dermatologist said it looked more like a bruise under the nail rather than a mole. She also said as it was very linear (not an odd shape) and the colouring along the band is consistent she said that this is reassuring. Melanomas tend to start at the nail bed with inconsistent shape and colouring.

Aw okay that's good hun ❤️ he said it's a remotely possibility of it being that but he couldn't see any lesions on examination just thinks it's a benign mole but doing it to definitely rule it out but that's the part that scares me as there is a small chance it could be xx

Sorry hun can I also ask if the line grew out when your nail grew? So sorry for going on but as you've had it it's nice to talk to someone who understands xx

Hey my mum died when I was 6 (32 now) so health anxiety is at its peak for me 24/7 too. I’ve just discovered a faint lineand will be calling gp in morning

MeinKraft · 19/06/2026 02:28

Specialists like your consultant will know even before the biopsy whether it’s malignant or benign. He’s trying to tell you that without overtly saying ‘it’s definitely benign’ in the 0.001% chance the biopsy shows something and you make a complaint about him. You can stop worrying about this now.

He wasn’t worried at all. Just said it’s discolouration. Common for Asian and black prople

CelticSilver · 19/06/2026 15:43

OP. Between 1 in 2 and 1 in 3 people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetimes. You need to get a handle on this (understandable) health anxiety.
