Can I take oestrogel if I’ve run out of progesterone

Aaggh! We are off on holiday early tomorrow morning and I’ve realised I’ve run out of progesterone tablets even though I have four tubes of oestrogel left. Do I need to stop using the gel if I don’t have the progesterone. I will NOT have a pleasant holiday without the HRT (and neither will DH!!)

are you going abroad? Get an emergency prescription to boots at the airport

Kaliaha · Yesterday 22:15

We fly really early in the morning so I can’t contact the GP

You might get some side effects of not taking it. Some countries like Spain have over the counter options or you could get a prescription from a local doctor.

You just call 111 and ask for an emergency prescription to be sent to whatever pharmacy.

If you're going to a European country you may be able to get it OTC
Continue taking the oestrogel anyway
You can go without progesterone for a couple of weeks easily

FanSpamTastic · Yesterday 23:27

just be aware that you might have a bleed. I got a bit lax at taking the tablets - I missed maybe 3 and a few days later had a really heavy bleed. Way heavier than my periods had ever been. I went for medical check up including ultrasound and nothing bad found - so put down to missing tablets. So pick up some pads at the airport just in case!

You are likely to have a bleed or spotting if you just suddenly stop the progesterone. Ring 111.

If you take oestrogen continuously then you should be okay. I don’t tolerate progesterone well so only take it every 3 months. This isn’t standard as it increases the risks of thickening the womb lining and therefor uterine cancer.

For a short period of time it is fine. But you might well get a bleed.
