How long before you start vomiting from norovirus are you contagious?

I have to do a complicated work trip involving a lot of different forms of transport next week. I wanted a quiet weekend but dp ‘forgot’ he invited his family round. I have no issues with this normally but his family are the type that never disclose illness for some odd reason.

His niece turned up looking totally grey. I asked if she was ok and was told she was fine. She insisted on cooking the dessert we all had on Saturday night. Sunday after lunch she started vomiting and has not left the loo. They are now having to stay an extra day as they can’t travel as she’s throwing up so much.

I fly tomorrow morning first thing (fgs!) and I am usually quite susceptible to these bugs. if I avoid where she is, have I got a chance? Tbh I’m more worried about the pudding she made (it required no cooking but she was dipping her finger in and out testing it).

Oh no! No words of advice but wishing you all the best. How old is the niece, and what was she thinking even going to your place if she was obviously unwell? I would not be happy at all.

MotherofPufflings · 14/06/2026 17:57

I don't know, but I'm surprised that she looked unwell so long before starting to vomit. Whenever I've had nv I've gone from feeling absolutely fine to puking in a matter of hours if not minutes. Maybe it's not nv and is something else?

OrangeJellySnakes · 14/06/2026 18:03

She’s in her 20s. Maybe it isn’t NV (cross your fingers!). I thought she looked grey but she said she didn’t feel unwell till this morning (and she started vomiting after lunch).

His family are totally weird about sickness. They just don’t seem to pay any attention to things being contagious and are forever arriving with horrible illnesss!

Fingers crossed for you.

Adult dd and ds have both (separately) had horrendous vomiting bugs over the past few years. Both times I was convinced we'd all get ill but the rest of us were fine🙏

How are you doing OP?

OrangeJellySnakes · 15/06/2026 18:13

I made the flight with no vomiting, thanks for asking. I had a bit of an upset tummy at the airport but I think that was nerves (psychosomatic!). Just spoke to Dp and his family have only just left because the partner of his niece was also vomiting last night (fgs!). So clearly a bug. It says 12 to 48 hours for transmission so I’m probably safe when I get to end of day Tuesday (cross your fingers!).

I have a long coach trip tomorrow and Wednesday and then another flight Thursday - if I can make it back to the UK without incident, I will be delighted!

Rooting for you!

hahabahbag · 15/06/2026 18:41

If you haven’t already make sure you have Imodium handy, not everyone vomits from NV, and one pill can get you on a plane !

I once thought we were safe when we were 72 hours of last vomiting episode - and still managed to infect an entire other household. It can be brutal and it’s so contagious. Fingers crossed for you!

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 16/06/2026 11:56

Wishing you luck OP !

sounds like she needs basic lessons in hygiene!
hope you got through your trip ok

OrangeJellySnakes · 18/06/2026 19:35

I am back! Hurrah! Thanks for all your support.

I am going to spend the weekend disinfecting the house 😂
