Fainting

My SIL (42) fainted suddenly in the street today on her way home. No other health issues, quite slim. Apparently she’s lying down now. Should she see the doctor? It’s not that hot here (SE London) but is warmish (19 degrees) here.

Yes she should, she will need to have her blood pressure checked as a minimum. I recently fainted and it was due to low blood pressure, and low potassium which is a complication on some medication I was on and I have had to have a lot of tests and a change in medication.

Thanks, I’ll advise her to do this.

Without Knowing if she had any symptoms beforehand or if she was dehydrated, on medication, existing medical conditions…etc, it’s hard to say. Fainting can be a one off event

What does she think? If she (like me) is a fainter, she might not be that concerned. If I’m slightly unwell and hear something about veins or twist my ankle, I’m gone. It looks bad but it’s not a big deal.

If she’s never fainted before and wasn’t feeling unwell before hand, maybe a GP visit.

When DH passed out last year for no apparent reason it turned out to be a heart problem. I would get it checked out.

She’s not a fainter but only had a sandwich for lunch yesterday.

Could’ve been dehydrated but doubtful. I’ll advise her to carry a water bottle if she doesn’t have one already. She was at work in the afternoon in Farringdon.

DW fainted last night in the pub after a meal with friends - she went out to the garden for some air, then sort of lay down - so not a full out like a light thing.

She's done this about 5 times in 25 years, including on our first date..

IIRC doctors weren't worried if it is kind of 1 off, which once every 5 years is, sort of.

I'd get iron and potassium levels checked. Iron should be ferritin 100 or more and transferrin saturation 20% or more.

She only ate one thing yesterday? What about today?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 14/06/2026 14:36

I fainted recently and it was due to a viral illness.

I got checked out and the Dr checked bloods and did an ECG.

Normal diet today I think.
