Sominex taken regularly?

Sominex seems to be a miracle for me!

I’ve been suffering for extreme perimenopausal insomnia. I wake after an hour or so of sleep and that it’s for the night.
In desperation I bought Sominex and took one and was like a zombie all the day the following day - two strong.

A bit of trial and error and I’ve realised about 1/4 or 1/3 of a tablet is the sweet spot that allows me to sleep but I wake nicely at 6am and are not groggy.

A bonus is that my IBS has also settled down!

I’ve read the packet and it says it can’t be taken for more than 2 weeks but would this also apply if you’re taking a smaller amount than the dosage? Is there another antihistamine I can take regularly for this effect?

Wouid be wonderful if there was!

I also had crippling perimenopausal insomnia (and night sweats and night anxiety to go with it), and discovered how effective promethazine was at tackling the insomnia. I do only have to take it for a few days though, to reset my sleeping pattern. It returns intermittently, and again a few days of promethazine is enough of a reset.

I’d probably speak to my GP first if I felt I needed to take it longer term.

Thanks, perhaps I should try a day or so without taking it, see what happens.

I have also discovered Sominex recently however my insomnia has been lifelong. I know I take it far more regularly than I should but it’s just a game changer. It does actually take 2 tablets to keep me asleep all night but I only do that when I’m desperate.

Not sure what the answer is or if there is something similar which can be taken long term.

I have the boots sleep ease which says the same, I try and just take half when I am desperate for a good sleep. Could you try this?

I actually read up on this this the other day as im really struggling with peri and hrt. Unfortunatley not safe long term.
I nearly fell asleep driving on friday morning after taking one at 10pm the night before.so decided no more.
Think im going to try calms night

With Sominex I try and just use it for a reset, but I agree I can't use a whole one. I generally use a half one for a couple of nights or if I use it longer I have to wean down to a quarter of a tablet for a couple of nights or I get rebound insomnia. Only used it for longer than a few days when I was doing my finals at university.

You could also try chlorphenamine maleate which I think is a bit less major than promethazine but still a drowsy antihistamine. I don't know if it's licensed as a sleep aid though.

Lifelong insomniac here. I have amazing sleep hygiene, I don't suffer from anxiety, but I just do not sleep unainded. I don't know how I survived my 20s and 30s on 2 to 3 hours a night with occassional days between sleeps. I use promethazine. I know the health risks, but sleep is needed. When it stops working, rather than up the dose, I swap it for another antihistamine or, especially if I've got some time off, then I'll just go without for a few weeks. None of the other things like melatonin and calms etc, worked for me.
