Knee dislocation & recovery

Dislocated my knee yesterday evening, I it came out after I knocked it on something turning around. It was out for around 8-15 seconds before I pushed it back in as i was bordering on passing out and couldn’t go any longer feeling it out.

went to A&E as couldn’t move on it at all and could hardly bend it. I have a brace and crutches, with some painkillers and a date to go to the knee clinic on the 22nd. Just wondering how painful it should be? I have dislocated my other knee around 10 years ago and same thing, had a brace on and then ended up with a cast for 8 weeks. I’m in ALOT of pain, all the inside of the side of my knee is in agony. Anytime I turn weirdly or move with leg even with the brace on puts all this pressure in my knee and underneath the patella itself. I keep getting these weird shock type pains and just pain overall.

i understand pain is normal but im a little worried as they couldn’t rule out ligiment injuries. They confirmed it wasn’t locked as they did a small test on my leg but I could hardly even manage them moving it a little bit.

That’s the soonest I could get, there isn’t anywhere else I can ring as it’s a direct appointment to the MSK knee clinic urgent treatment from A&E. I did ask for sooner but they said one of the consultants has gone on sick leave so they’re short staffed

Could you ask to be put on the short notice list? Different trusts where I live all operate this system, if someone can’t make an appointment it’s offered to someone else? Unfortunately I miss a lot of appts due to seizures but my DH always rings clinic/consultant secretaries if he finds me beforehand and they assure him they ring someone to fill the slot. I always feel guilty (and pissed off!) when I miss an appointment but like to think that someone like you who is suffering gets an earlier appointment.

I’ve managed to get an appointment for the 18th at 11am, they’re not that great I’m ngl. While I was in the hospital they had me waiting 6 hours (although my knee was okay) with only 1 paracetamol dose during the whole thing. I was asking for pain relief for hours and hours and then lied after 5 hours and told me I had only been there 3 hours when I knew what time the ambulance had brought me in

I meant my knee had gone back into place at that point, I just couldn’t bend it at all

That’s crap for A and E, ime. The wait times are long at my usual A and E, but proper pain relief is given after you’ve been triaged correctly. If I’ve been taken in by ambulance with a dislocation injury I’ve usually been given gas and air (or whatever the updated name for it is!) en route and the paramedics stay with you until you’re triaged, so you get to hang on to the gas and air (always a bonus Smile). I don’t know if I’m treated differently because of medical conditions, but it sounds like you’ve been let down. Can you change hospitals under the Right to Choose, or is that not an option?

abcdefg2020 · 12/06/2026 18:21

I don’t think it’s an option as it’s the closest hospital to me unfortunately, if they don’t take me seriously next week though I will be asking for all my notes and getting a second opinion as I literally CANNOT walk or bear weight on it

Just a lil update again

my knee still hurts, can’t put any weight on it without the brace. Anytime I have to have it off (to change and to shower) it feels super unstable still m
my dog launched himself on me today and stood right on my knee the absolute A** lol, that made it hurt a bit more but don’t think he did any more damage

appointment is on the 18th @ 11am, super convinced I’ve really damaged it. Fingers crossed I just need physio on it weekly but I’m not too hopeful

Had my appointment and couldn’t have a full assessment as it hurt too much and couldn’t bend it past 20 degrees. It was a lot to do with my anxiety as well and fear that it would dislocate again. I tried twice and managed to push myself to the 20 on the second try. MRI scheduled for next Tuesday

Good luck for the MRI, are you having it with contrast? I know I’ve been told contrast dye helps get more useful results but can’t remember why! something to do it’s ligaments? What did they tell you from thr assessment? Understand the guarding through fear too, physio helped me with that, when your knee is better enough for it hopefully!

apologies if not clear post, ive been in hospital and amazingly also managed to dislocate my other knee amongst other injuries, Truly impressive feat. Couldn’t make it up!

abcdefg2020 · 20/06/2026 22:52

My knee is still swollen and still struggling to bend it. They couldn’t tell me 100% what they thought was wrong as they couldn’t assess however they’re gonna do the MRI to check ligaments n such and make sure it was 100% a patella dislocation.

I have no patella grooves and severe Hypermobility in both knees and they used to dislocate all the time. I reckon 20+ on each leg up until I had screws put in both knees. Seriously painful but usually back on my feet after a couple of weeks. As the joints got progressively more damaged, the recovery time was shorter!

abcdefg2020 · 23/06/2026 13:08

My MRI is today at 5pm, I got woken up this morning with a burning sensation in my knee and it felt like the knee was trying to pop out again. Since this morning my knee has felt worse than ever and it feels like the kneecap keeps trying to move about in its place :/
