Any ENT doctors about? Metallic taste after microlarynoscopy

Hi,

My 82 year old DM had a microlarynoscopy almost 3 weeks ago to remove a polyp on her vocal cord. Since then she has a metallic taste in her mouth and all food and drink (including water) tastes metallic. To be honest, the hospital were pretty rubbish and she was given no warning that this might be a side effect.

Is this common and will it return to normal? We lost my dad in April and mum loves her food and wine so cooking and eating out is a something that should be bringing her joy. The thought of this being permanent is really upsetting her and she's saying she wouldn't have had it done if she'd known.

Thanks in advance.

What do they think is causing it - that will give her a better idea of how long it might take to recover.

She’s not seen or spoken to the hospital anyone since she was discharged after day surgery. She wasn’t told that this might happen and she’s struggling to get through to the ENT dept by phone.

She needs to speak to them then so they can have a think about what’s caused it and advise her. Surgeon’s secretary should be able to help if the usual post-op contact numbers aren’t useful. Might also be worth seeing her dentist in case it’s a coincidental dental thing.
