Should I wake an ill toddler with a high temperature from a v long nap?

She's been asleep for nearly four hours now and is showing no signs of waking up at all. I would let her sleep but my selfish side says we're all going to be reading Meg and Mog at 4am if I don't. What would you do?

i think id wake her up and give her a drink
did you give her medicine before she went down? sometimes that can make them sleepy (im sure you knew that already!)

iMum · 23/06/2008 14:10

Probably wake her with a nice sweet drink and snack, thencuddle on the sofa?
But if she seems really sleepy then maybe let her sleep?

orangina · 23/06/2008 14:10

I would only wake her if she needed another dose of calpol/nurofen. I would let her sleep, as, IMO, they tend to sleep more when they are feverish and ill....

avenanap · 23/06/2008 14:10

I would phone the GP. Sleeping can be a normal resonse to an illness but I would get it checked, especially as she has a high temp. Can you wake her up? I really would wake her.

halogen · 23/06/2008 14:11

She's had some calprofen and quite a lot of smoothie before she fell asleep. I think I will try to wake her up again and see what happens. I tried a while ago but she just looked at me with a 'what on earth do you think you're doing' look and went back to sleep.

yes wake her up, and give her something to get her temperature down.

nailpolish · 23/06/2008 14:12

my 2 often had 4 hr naps though (ill or not). dont be worrying about that

nailpolish · 23/06/2008 14:13

just pick her up and give her a cuddle downstairs with a drink
dont give her any more medicine straigt away though, she obv doesnt need it if shes still asleep

halogen · 23/06/2008 14:18

Thanks, all. She's just woken up on her own and demanded a biscuit and more smoothie so I think she's feeling a bit better. Thanks for the advice and reassurance!

that's good.

avenanap · 23/06/2008 14:22

Does she have a cold or anything else that can give her a fever?

halogen · 23/06/2008 15:14

No, not really. There seems to be quite a bit of it about at the moment, though - we know a few children who've had a virusy thing where they just get a high temp and go a bit floppy for a few days and then get better without ever really getting any other symptoms.

avenanap · 23/06/2008 15:23

The policy where I live is for the GP to refer a child to the childrens hospital if they have a fever with an unknown cause. it would probably be best to take her to the GP incase she needs treatment for something. It may be the virus and might go by itself but I always work on the side of caution. I hope she's feeling better soon though.

JodieG1 · 23/06/2008 15:29

A high temp is the body's way of fighting off illness so it's not a bad thing in itself. Our gps always say that unless the fever has a rash or other symptoms then it's no cause for concern.

Mine have temps up to 104/105 when they get ill.

avenanap · 23/06/2008 15:32

They call them PUO where I work, pyrexia of unknown origin. They give them blood tests and keep them in hospital until the fever's gone. Sometimes they don't get the rash with certain illnesses so they are always very careful.

JodieG1 · 23/06/2008 15:44

Strange, I've never come across that with any of my 3. Gps are always quite happy to see them but if it's just a high temp then they aren't bothered, gps are very good as well.

belgo · 23/06/2008 15:50

My girls sometimes have high temperatures for no reason - I'm usually not too worried if I can control if with calpol. I was a bit concerned though the other week when dd2 had an extra long daytime nap, and finally when I woke her she had a temperature of 41.3°C.

melrose · 23/06/2008 15:54

avenanap, I think that would only be if the fever does not reduce with paracetomol or ibuprofen, if not there would be an awful lot of todlers in hospital surely?? No point going to the GP for a fever with a cold/ virus that reduces with calpol as they cannot give you anything else! (or mabe I am just a bad mother)

melrose · 23/06/2008 15:55

and my 2 always sleep lots more if ill (as do most of us!)

halogen · 23/06/2008 17:29

She's loads better now and the fever is coming down when I give her calprofen so I probably won't go to the GP unless she is still really ill tomorrow. Her appetite isn't suffering too much so I don't think it's serious. Thanks so much everyone.
