Should we cancel my husband’s private health cover and use work insurance?

We have health insurance, that we can afford but I'm looking to make some savings as we have a few big costs coming up. DH has just changed jobs and gets health insurance as a benefit. Is there any good reason why we shouldn't cancel his and let him rely on the work one? Thanks

Check the waiting periods in the T&Cs. And what the rules are on pre-existing conditions. And any exclusions that matter to you. If that’s all good, I’d cancel the other policy.

Just changed jobs? I’d wait and see for a bit.

I wouldn’t, if nothing else you have no idea how the job will pan out and if you cancel your current cover and then he leaves, gets sacked, just wants to change jobs again in future, anything that has cropped up health-wise would then be excluded on a new policy or ££££ to cover

Be aware that health insurance will be a benefit in kind and attract a tax charge. It’s much lower than paying for it yourself though.

You may also find he gets family cover so worth checking that too.

I agree about waiting a bit to see how the job goes, and what the conditions of the cover are. But I get good health insurance through work and would never pay for it separately as well long term.

Thank you, I might have a rethink

I’ve discovered to my cost that you really should review your private health insurance annually. Personally I would cancel the one you are paying yourselves and if necessary you can always sign up to another. I stuck with one company for years and was able to more than halve the premium just by changing providers and that was with a health history. There is no loyalty benefit in staying with one company.
