TW gross pic- any advice for large bubble blister on toe?!

BlisterNC · 24/05/2026 00:00

Apologies for the gross pic of my toe. Yesterday I decided to wear my Birkenstock Boston leather clogs because it’s so warm.

Even though I’ve owned them for few years and was wearing socks, they rubbed one of my toes and I had a very small blister which was a bit itchy yesterday night. Didn’t really notice much of a bubble but could see tiny slightly raised blister this morning.

I went to a music festival from 2pm - 11pm, lots of walking and dancing. I wore trainers and although the toe felt a bit sensitive / tight in these comfortable trainers, no pain at start of day. However by the end of day became painful when putting weight on.

Finally get home and realise I now have this huge bubble blister on my toe 🥲 never experienced this before and desperately seeking advice on what to do for it to heal asap. It doesn’t really hurt when I don’t put weight on it and raise the foot. I plan to stay in all day tomorrow and not dare put any shoes on or walk much. However I have to go to work / walk a lot, busy tube etc on Tuesday and scared it won’t heal by then

Sterilose a fine needle to burst it and squeeze out the fluid.

This is why there is a worn once pair of Birkies on my cupboard.

HelenaWilson · 24/05/2026 00:11

Can't see the pic, but if it was me I'd burst it with a needle. Let it drain. Go barefoot as much as possible for the next couple of days to let it dry out and start healing. Put a plaster or dressing on the place on Tuesday to protect it.

BlisterNC · 24/05/2026 00:13

Thanks for the suggestion, although the NHS website says not to burst blister

HelenaWilson · 24/05/2026 00:17

If you don't, it may well burst on its own when you're walking about on it, and you may not be able to keep it clean and dry and it may become more sore.

(And doesn't everyone burst a blister, whatever the NHS says?)

Tortoisel · 24/05/2026 00:20

Sterilise instrument. Burst and drain. Drench in iodine. Air dry. Hopefully will start to heal over by Tuesday. Get hydrocolloid blister cushion plasters for next week if not.

BeautySimplified · 24/05/2026 00:23

I never burst blisters, if they burst on their own that’s a different story…. I normally let the air at it as much as I can but cover in bed with something like a mepore dressing.

Thanks do you know roughly how long it takes to heal without bursting? Or at least go down in size and feel less pressure

I can stay barefoot and keep weight off it tomorrow and maybe even Monday

No picture showing
Leave it alone , if it is clear fluid it should reabsorb if you keep the irriation off it .

Listen to the Nhs advice and put that needle down .

You can use a non fluffy gauze over the site , tape the edges to secure . You want the fluid to absorb and the blister to flatten and it will spontaneously deroof when it is ready .

You can get those Compeed Blister Plasters to protect the site

Would it be ridiculous if I called 111 for this?

I googled and found self referral NHS podiatrist services in my area.

On website says “Patients can self-refer to the service, including emergency clinics.
Conditions Treated:
Urgent Foot Conditions
• Blisters and sores…

However also says for urgent foot clinic not able to arrange appointments on weekends or bank holidays 😕
Out of hours, please contact NHS 111
Referral Criteria Emergency Foot Clinic

  • Blisters and sores
  • Discharging and infected wounds
  • Inflamed areas such as acute ingrowing toenails

Yes it would. It's not an emergency.

The only thing you have to be careful of is not to break the skin under the blister.

Burst it or don't burst it as you please, put a dressing on it when you need to put on shoes and walk, otherwise leave it alone.

TheyGrewUp · 24/05/2026 00:52

Yes, completely unreasonable. Keep it clean whether you burst it or not. Surgical spirit is good and if it's hurting take two paracetamol. If it still hurts badly on Tuesday, make a chiropody appointment and pay for it.

If it gets infected, which is unlikely but you'll know about it, seek NHS help.

FFS it's a blister caused by a shoe rubbing.

Thanks guys, I do have health anxiety hence asking here and I’ve never experienced this before

I don’t want to waste NHS time so won’t call

Do you have diabetes or any other medical conditions that make you vunerable to infection or compromised healing .
I the area of the blister showing any sign of infection? ( Red/Hot/Swollen/Painful/Pus ? )

If not then self care .

LITHA

Keep the pressure off it
Let nature take it's course .
You can photo it to keep a record if you do find it gets worse .

Zanatdy · 24/05/2026 04:19

You don’t need to call 111 about a blister, especially as you’re saying it doesn’t really hurt. It will just get better on its own in the next few days. Personally i’d just leave it alone, don’t burst it and allow it to get some air to it. I’ve had plenty of nasty blisters over the years.

I can only speak for my experience but the one I had a few weeks ago took about a week to reabsorb.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 24/05/2026 09:14

I’ve had many blisters like that over the years. I’ve always burst them and then put germolene and a plaster over them and they gradually heal.

HelenaWilson · 24/05/2026 09:45

I can see the picture now. If it was me I would burst it because I'd expect it to burst anyway when I put shoes on and started walking. Just pierce it gently with a needle and let it drain. But that's up to you. Don't burst it if you don't want to.

But it's nothing to worry about. Maybe your feet swelled up a bit in the heat and that's why your normally comfortable shoes started rubbing. Everyone gets blisters at some point and you're fortunate never to have had one before.

redboxerclub · 24/05/2026 09:48

just pop it with a needle and the pressure and pain will go and then buy some compeed blister plasters (the small ones for toes and it will be fine)

Thinking to try this as even though I’ve stayed in all day, bare foot it is soo tender painful. I can’t put weight on it

I was nervous about popping it before in case of infection but now just hoping this will relieve the pain (history of eczema which used to get infected with staph)

For anyone who has had similar sized blisters, when did it stop hurting and when were you able to walk again?

As soon as you pop it it will be fine. Sterilise a needle in a flame and don’t wipe the soot off.

Clean wound with an alcohol wipe or rubbing alcohol. Wash hands well.

I have had hundreds of blisters and they have never ever got infected but I appreciate the concern as I had infected sunburn once and omg it was burning in pain so assume that was staph as the day ifter I started antibiotics was instant relief ( 8 days after getting burnt).

Compeed is great. It protect the skin. Use a plaster until you can get some compeed. It might be a bit sore but nothing g like the agony of a a huge blister.

if you let it pop naturally the edges can bit raggedly which can compromise healing

2 weeks ago, I did a long walk in unsuitable footwear.

I really traumatised both little toes. Both had big blisters. One burst from the friction, the other one didn’t. The burst side was so painful and took longer to heal. The side with the intact blister looked terrible but was actually much quicker to recover.

stichguru · 24/05/2026 21:28

Buy Compeed
https://www.superdrug.com/health/first-aid/foot-blister-and-plasters/compeed-blister-plasters-medium-pack-of-5/p/797951?gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=18158841731&gbraid=0AAAAADp4mz_KXp7g4Rm-KyQ-2u7GTlQ2j&gclid=Cj0KCQjww8rQBhDjARIsAE43KPOlyZ49hmIrpkBfbXsrwABSZmEaeCZPcl9P80vOXj4DdIDUvfMlOuAaAsLUEALw_wcB

Leave a plaster on for a few days inside whatever footwear you are wearing. As the blister dries out the plaster will work lose and should eventually bring off the blister with it.

Allonthesametrain · 24/05/2026 21:33

Hot water wrap, though I'm impatient and love to burst them with a sterilised needle and have control and gratification!

steppemum · 24/05/2026 21:37

normally I would say buy porper blister plasters for it for Tuesday (compeed plasters) and don't burst it.

But in my experience when it is a large blister, it is better to burst it. Yours is huge. I would burst with a sterilized needle. Then leave it open to the air for as long as possible and on Tuesday wrap in compeed blister plaster for putting shoes on.
