How long does diarrhoea usually last?

Um what is this?! I've had it since Tuesday. I think I've eaten a croissant and 4 slices of toast since then. Not even hungry. Today is the worst day. I am going every 10 minutes. Lots of brown water.

What is the trajectory of this? Should I drink lots of water?

I know I drank bad milk twice which bought it on as my stomach swelled a lot.

Does it become anything more serious?

You’ll be fine. Just lay off the bad milk!

I’ve got Crohn’s so I’m a diarrhoea expert unfortunately. You’ll be fine, your body’s sorting it out, a nasty dose of food poisoning and take a good while to get out of your system. Drink plenty of water, a glass for every episode of diarrhoea.

I don't think I've touched water for 2 days. The diarrhoea stopped and I van barely keep my eyes open.

You need to start sipping water if you can, you won’t feel well if you get dehydrated. It will also help clear out whatever you have in your system.

You really need to rehydrate yourself, jelly, ice cream, cups of tea, any fluid you fancy but get it in you or you’ll feel even worse.

Thanks, I've eaten two Twister lollies for calories. Put some stuff in a basket for a Whoosh delivery tomorrow. Lights hurt my eyes.

I'm no expert but you sound at risk of severe dehydration. Are you urinating ok? Do you have anyone to check on you? One of my family members had a mystery illness with diarrhoea and I think his doc actually wanted to hospitalise due to risk of dehydration. He was ok in the end thankfully. You really do need to keep fluids up as you're losing so much constantly. Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Sounds like you could be dehydrated

TheOliveDreamer · 23/05/2026 20:21

I've had more lollies, rice cakes, white toast, coconut water. I just feel sick now as its not my regular food lol. Still working it out the system. Will try some dioralyte.

I had gastroenteritis last summer, on and off for three weeks. Every time I thought I was better and went back to work, it returned! The GP did mention maybe having to be put on a drip in hospital for rehydration but I didn’t have to. However a friend who had the same (we hadn’t seen each other so didn’t catch it) did need a drip.
Your GP may request a poo sample to be sent for testing.
Drink whatever you can - tea, coffee, lemonade whatever- and eat very bland food. A pharmacy should sell some sachets you can add to water if you can get someone to fetch them.
You need to listen to your body and rest.
Hope you feel better soon.

Hope you feel better soon. Ds had a bad bout which lasted 3 weeks, earlier this year. He survived on Lucozade Sport (the still version), which will help to replace the salts and keep you hydrated.

It might be worth laying off the coconut water as it can continue to upset your tummy if you’ve already got diarrhoea.
