Voluntarily surrender license - medical condition

I have been in touch with DVLA to report epileptic seizures. I can’t drive for 12 months.

The letter they sent me in response says that I can ‘voluntarily surrender my license’. Obviously I realise I can’t drive for a year, but does ‘voluntarily’ mean I don’t HAVE to send the license, but obviously stop driving? I don’t understand why it doesn’t say ‘please send your driving license to so and so address’.

Assume I do need to send it, but does anyone know for certain?

Nvm, I’ve just looked it up properly and can see that I do need to send it!

It’s just a slightly smoother process to get it back if you voluntarily surrender than if you’re banned by them I think

I had to do this after I had brain surgery (I was very sad about it at the time, but I appreciate it made sense from a safety point of view).
The good news about 'voluntarily' surrendering it (as opposed to a doctor reporting you to the DVLA) is that after being seizure free for 6 months it was easier for me to get my license back.

Good luck, it's frustrating but sadly necessary.

I've also had to do this after brain surgery, it's far easier to get it back if you surrender. Getting it back is a nightmare, as the DVLA team are so small. It took me another 6 months for it to go through. M8ne wasn't because I had a seizure, it was because there was an increased risk.
