Dentist… Molar incisor hypomineralisation

Help…. An anxious mum!

Son is 8 years old. He goes to a private dentist every 6 months.

I noticed some white markings on his front teeth and raised my concerns to his dentist (about 4 weeks ago). He also has brown marks on a baby second molar which he still has.

the dentist referenced it’s probably MIH but didn’t recommend any treatments such as sealants or varnish. So now that I’ve done my own research,
im wondering if I should take him back as I believe early prevention is key.

Also don’t have a clue what to expect going forward. I’ve researched and according to the internet, a fluoride mouthwash can help after lunch / school. But again, dentist didn’t mention it so should I just do that or not.

anyway… I’m just panicking a little.

Any advice or experience appreciated. Thanks.

I’ll try to upload photos.

First permanent molars are the ones at the back

My child has this but is a lot worse than these pictures (dentist did suggest they would need their molars removing).

They have been referred too but nothing extra was done. I have looked into extra fluoride toothpaste but I get told it’s “too spicy”. We are just making sure we check teeth morning and evening and limit snacking. But following incase I should be pushing more or anything we can do in the mean time

My DC uses GC Tooth Mousse. We didn’t get any advice from our dentist either apart from to brush regular etc etc

Thanks for the comments and sorry your children are having the same issue.

I believe the extra fluoride toothpaste can be used after the age of 10. And I’ve gotten this fluoride rinse to use once a day. General consensus online is that it’s ok for a child age 8 with this issue. But lots of mention of sealants and varnish which I’d like him to have if they’d be of benefit.

For those with a child with it, how soon after the teeth emerged did you notice an issue?

thanks!

Also, if anyone’s child has the white markings, do they come and go as the teeth are dehydrated and rehydrated?

I noticed the marks as soon as the tooth started to grow for the front teeth (age 6) they are yellow and stained. Stupidly thought maybe they just need a bit of a polish. Kids have noticed at school and commented.

When we went to the dentist they then showed me the first molars which are also very yellow in colour.

The marks never change in colour for my child’s teeth

Thank you. My sons sounds a little different in that his looked ok as they grew through but the appearance has changed a year to 2 years after they erupted. Unless it was there the whole time and I just didn’t spot it.

You mention the yellow colour, how are your child’s molars in terms of are they looking crumbly? Have they progressively appeared worse over time or fairly stable with good care?

Thanks x

Their molars have only just erupted to be honest, so it’s a watch and wait. I think they said they would end up being removed around age 8 but waiting on specialist review. They look ok for now, super sensitive teeth but not breaking / crumbling so far

Thanks. I had a look into this product and it’s available with or without fluoride. May I ask which version you use?
