Stoprightnoww · 15/05/2026 15:19

for the past couple of days my poop has been black. No other symptoms. When I google it says medical emergency and to go to a&e but I really don’t want to as feel ok. Do I need to go? Any one experienced this

I can indicate bleeding high up. It's probably something you should get checked out. Maybe ring the GP.

7238SM · 15/05/2026 15:21

I assume you haven't started taking iron meds or eaten alot of licorice or black pudding?
If none of the above then its likely you do have a bleeding somewhere in your upper colon/GI tract and should get this looked at.

Stoprightnoww · 15/05/2026 15:21

I’m thinking of calling 111 just don’t want to waste their time. Gp won’t answer

I suffer from health anxiety and I’m really worried after googling. I’m going to call 111 now

Yes you need to be seen really. Try to keep calm, nhs 111 will guide you x

RaraRachael · 15/05/2026 15:40

My mother said she had back poo just before appendicitis

DoggusDomesticus · 15/05/2026 15:43

Glad you're getting it checked. Hope you're OK.

Fiftyandme · 15/05/2026 15:52

Needs to be checked

Pippatpip · 15/05/2026 16:47

Peptobismol causes black poo.

SqueakyFromme · 15/05/2026 16:49

Red Wine does too Wine

cymruyespls · 16/05/2026 21:41

Did you see someone in the end OP?
It might be down to something completely innocent, but it’s always best to get things like this checked out.

Stoprightnoww · 16/05/2026 21:47

I’ve not been checked. I was on hold to 111 and hung up. I feel fine. Not had a pop today but going to call GP on Monday

Could be iron supplements or licquorice or vitamins with iron check if you are taking vitamins,,

TalulahJP · 16/05/2026 22:16

iron in my multivitamin does that to me.

if youve not started iron tablets or a multivitamin, or eaten new foods, you can safely assume the black is dried blood from your insides.

you need it checked out as soon as possible. dont hang around phone them. at the very minimum i’d be asking if i should stop the new meds.

you may feel ok just now but people die of burst ulcers and other things so dont dally get on with contacting nhs24.

Stoprightnoww · 16/05/2026 22:23

I take multivitamins but I’ve been taking them for years so that’s nothing new but I’ve never had black poo with them

If you read the rare but serious side effects of sertraline it clearly states bleeding. Black poo can be melaena which is due to bleeding from the gut. So definitely needs checking.
Always read the package insert that is included in every box of medication. It is there to keep you safe.

LIZS · 16/05/2026 22:49

Have you eaten anything like beetroot, black or blue berries or red meat? Taken a tonic or red wine?

PurpleLovecats · 16/05/2026 22:55

You really need this checked you know.

shhblackbag · 16/05/2026 22:58

You should have that checked as soon as possible. It can indicate bleeding, as others have said.

EBearhug · 16/05/2026 23:07

Don't want yo scare you, but it was one of my mother's symptoms before she was admitted to ITU and died. She already had comorbidities and was on lots of meds, and it probably just hastened an end that would have been coming.

But ultimately, it was the blood loss that killed her at that point. It can be very serious. Don't wait till Mondsy. Call 111 again and don't hang up.

ForTheLoveOfGrace · 16/05/2026 23:18

Sorry if someone else has said this. But have you drank red wine recently? That always turns mine black.

mcrlover · 17/05/2026 00:47

I'd call the GP just in case, but black poo due to a bleed in the gut (ie anything sinister) is called "melena" and it isn't just black in colour, it's described as black, sticky and "tarry", and very very smelly - either smelling metallic, or very foul, or sickly sweet

Whereas poos that are black in colour but otherwise normal don't sound like melena

Have you spoken to anyone with medical training since you hung up?
