Help with pain relief after teen brace fitting

My dc15 seems to be in huge amounts of pain after getting braces fitted. I've been alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol, they say it's making no difference. Can't eat and now struggling to get to sleep! I had no idea it would be this bad...any top tips? Thank you in advance!

Yeah mine had this.

ibuprofen and paracetamol. I also bought mouth gel which helped with rubbing in the mouth.

only eat very liquid food for a while - soup, ice cream, yoghurt etc.

Orajel to rub on gums, there are different strengths. The pain does ease

PurpleLovecats · 12/05/2026 22:19

I still remember the pain 40 years later! It settles after about 48 hours.

Ice cream and cold drinks helped my dd and she got this wax stuff from the dentist to stop rubbing.

Orajel and difflam oral rinse keep up painkillers. It’s horrible having a sore mouth so if no sleep maybe a day in bed!

Every few months they have to go back to get it tightened and the pain is the same for another night or so. My daughter used to take calpol and that seemed to help

When I was 25 I had 6 teeth removed top and bottom braces a pallet expander and lower jaw surgery. Her braces pain will last a couple of days and will come back at every tigtening but she will live!

Thank you all! I've been taken aback by the severity of it, they're really struggling.
I think hungry too...very hard to find things for a packed lunch!
Glad to hear it will wear off a bit...we're all suffering!

Yes, mine said it was the worst pain ever, but lasts a 24-48 hours (not that that is great timescale when you are in pain). Loads of good advice here, and it is definitely a time to keep popping the painkillers, and an easy day. You could ring the dentist or doctor and say that normal over the counter stuff isn't shifting the pain, and see what they offer. Although I am sure you don't want them on stronger stuff, I think temporarily, this is a good reason. x

Hope it better today. I had a horrendous extraction and it was awful. Lived in milkshakes, yoghurts and mashed potatoes for a few days. I went back to work for two days and then had to come home for two days! I couldn’t talk.

Ah poor thing, my DD has been like this for the first couple of days after they get tightened. Pain relief and a soft diet has been the thing for her. She’s had to miss the occasional day of school too because of the pain.

nailslikeknives · 13/05/2026 23:17

My two had to have painkillers for a few days and a very soft diet. For packed lunches, I let them have huel for a week at school. Once they could cope, they went back onto soft rolls and normal quite soft food.

Soluble paracetamol fill mouth with it and hold for as long as they can without swallowing

EvelynBeatrice · 13/05/2026 23:24

Bonjela.

fluffydoglove · 13/05/2026 23:54

My Dd had braces fitted two years ago and she was in pain for a full week before it eased off ..she couldn’t eat anything because it hurt too much for the first week she lived on yogurt and soup

eewwdavid · 14/05/2026 07:10

God I hope all these straight teeth are worth it! Seems torturous. Thanks all, I now have waxes, ice packs, huel drinks and lots of painkillers!
