Choking whilst eating burger or similar

I used to get a choking feeling whilst eating a burger and today I had a sausage and egg McMuffin and had similar feeling. Apparently it’s dysphasia. It’s only McDonald’s food though. I don’t eat Burger King or Five Guys. Any other explanations?

Assuming you mean dysphagia? If so then yes I have this, it's only set off by certain textures of food so I can see why it would happen to you with a mcdonalds especially if it's due to reflux

Yes dysphagia. I don’t get acid reflux though. Interesting re textures. Fine with everything else.

Yes I have this. I get it with McDonald's but also get it with wet food like soup or sauces. Horrible. It can last weeks and then stop then reappear.

Interesting! Thank you. It’s just McDonalds (which I hand rarely). Actually last month when I had McDonald’s out I didn’t get this. Strange.

I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but I really struggle with meat and bread, it's not that I'm choking, I just cannot swallow, it's almost like the muscles stop working.

It only really happens when I'm stressed or anxious.

Maybe that’s it? It’s just strange it’s only really happened with this but I think it happened with a sausage and egg roll at a cafe too now I think of it.

That’s the thing. I put it sort of wrong. I don’t choke but struggle to swallow it. It’s almost like it gets stuck. I have to wash it down with liquid.

This started happening to my husband more and more often with a greater variety of food. It got to the point that sometimes he could not swallow the food and it would come back up. It took time to get that bad. He eventually had his esophagus examined and stretched while they were in there. They found it had some inflammation and a distinct narrowing. The doctor put him on a reflux med and a few months later they repeated the surgery. The inflammation was better, but they did stretch everything again. He hasn’t had any problems since then.

He had a relative with similar issues. She had to have the procedure repeated every 10 years or so. We won’t be surprised if that happens for him as well.

I similar sometimes with meat or crusty bread. The food gets stuck and my mouth fills with saliva.
If I try and swallow too much I end up coughing loads until I bring it back up but if I sit with my mouth slightly open it very slowly goes down.

I get this too, usually with things like bread that are quite solid. It’s got worse with age. I now have to have a drink whenever I eat or I get hiccups. Sometimes it actually hurts to eat without water
to wash it down

A&E triage nurse said they recommend a can of full fat coke for food stuck in throat.

Thanks for that. I’ll get coke next time.

Exactly! It’s got worse with age, started in 40s, I’m now 54. Glad I’m not the only one it’s happening to.

If it gets worse I’m definitely seeing the doctor.

Yeah I get this and so does my dad. I always have to make sure I drink with a meal and don’t eat too fast. It’s worse with stodgy dry things like crusty bread and chips.
I have found that taking a big breath in and expanding my chest helps the food to go down when drinking isn’t helping.

CanIinterestyouinasarcasticcomment · 13/05/2026 15:07

@Despairsquid11 I always have to have a drink too, I can't eat even liquid such as soup, without a drink. Pretty sure mine is psychological and not a physical problem, as mine is much worse with an audience.

Takemytimeandhurryup · 14/05/2026 08:35

Oh just to add. If I take a drink I can sometimes be worse. It's too wet. I had an interesting chat with my dentist who said it's perhaps down to perimenopase. Perhaps. I am 50 and premenopausal. However, my daughter gets this and is in her early 20s so I think it's an anxiety thing

I’m past menopause (54) but this happened before I was in peri menopause too. Never happened before though. Don’t think I’m that anxious tbh.

Fish or sausage in batter with chips, nothing. Strange isn’t it?

I started getting similar in my late forties/early fifties. Food started to get lodged in my throat and sometimes I would have to nip to the toilet and regurgitate it. It happened more often when I was eating out and I noticed it seemed to be when I ate certain textures of food, like chips or bread, combined with a busy/fussy environment where I felt a bit stressed. I still get it now, at 59, on the odd occasion, but it has improved massively. I seem to have bouts of it, so when I notice it creeping back, I take omeprazole for a few days. I know a lot of people use it all the time, but I have read a few articles stating that this isn’t ideal. A friend of mine has the exact same issue and had her oesophagus stretched, but unfortunately it didn’t make any difference. I know that if I concentrate on eating and I chew my food properly, it doesn’t happen. I did panic when it first started, in case it was something serious, but I’m still here ten years later and it has definitely improved, rather than getting worse, so I try not to dwell on it too much.

mungo55 · 14/05/2026 15:19

I thought it was just me! I’m can’t eat meat and bread together either. It is like my muscles stop and I can’t swallow. Glad it is not abnormal

I always chew the burger mcmuffin properly though. It’s probably a sign telling me not to eat junk food.
