What was chickenpox like for you as an adult?

My DD currently has chickenpox. She's not too badly affected at all; not a lot of spots, seemingly not itchy and no other symptoms. My DS hasn't had it, and neither have I (as far as I know - Mum always said I didn't get it when my brother had it).

Unfortunately, we've never been able to afford immunisation for it. At £90 x 2 per person, it's been well out of our reach.

I'm not too worried about my son getting it. He'll be 13 soon and while I know it might not be so mild for him, I'd rather he got it over and done with

I'm worried about me though. Everything I read says it will be horrendous. Is that your experience of having it as an adult? I'm prepared to phone GP for anti-virals if I get symptoms

Also, sorry, but I also looked in the mirror at some point after the spots had started to turn dark, and 20 years on I'm still horrified by the memory of the sight. It was one of the most ill times of my life.

I was 50 and was quite poorly. I was flying back to NZ via Singapore and got some itchy spots on my chest. I thought they were Mozzie bites. When I got to Auckland I had the rash on my my back and it still never occurred to me it was CP.

It took a couple of weeks to get over the rash, but I was really tired for around a month.

I am really sorry if anyone caught CP from me on those flights in 2006😂

Had it late 20s. Felt rough for a couple of days and had the worse pox all over my face which made me unsightly. It was fine. I lived alone and was supposed to be giving a lecture 200 miles away that I was dreading - and didn't have to do it - so there was a silver lining.

Had it at 19/20 (was there a vaccine when I was a child I’m not sure) it was the singles I caught not long after that were worse but again there were no medications so I just had to wait it out. That was 30 years ago and I still occasionally get a bit of nerve pain in one spot when I’m run down.
