Frozen shoulder experiences

Has anyone successfully shortened the recovery time of a Frozen shoulder? I’m having physio but it isn’t getting any better (quite impatient as only been 2 months). Does anyone know a magic cure, potion, exercise that speed up healing?

Ive also heard that it can return! So any tips on preventing this from happening. (Again, already impatient for my possible second round :)

TIA

Steroid injection in the shoulder and exercises given by the GP worked for me. Another meno symptom. Men get away with murder.

Men get frozen shoulders too, but not as commonly.

My father in law had frozen shoulder in both shoulders in the 70s. He had the operation under general anaesthetic where they forced the shoulder to move around a lot. It's not done anymore, because it causes damage.

HRT if you’re not on it and can use it, or if you are, review your dosage! This is massively associated with perimenopause and menopause.

Had it in both shoulders at different times. Basic physio exercises helped a bit, via NHS physio. For the second one I went private and endured lots of extremely painful - and it turned out completely pointless - massage and manipulation. The best thing is a hot water bottle.

Thank you both.

Mine lasted 14 months so I’ve got nothing to help except say you have my sympathy - the worst was after a full open hysterectomy for ovarian cancer and trying to get myself up and out of bed with one good arm

Thank you so much for all the replies. I am on HRT peri. Interested in the treatments mentioned above. I’ve been offered steroid injection. Sympathies to my fellow sufferers x

Mine took about five months; I went to a (private) sports physio and he said he could tell it was progressing relatively quickly so hopefully wouldn’t last the 2 years that is quite common.

Like some of the PPs I went all out on the exercises he prescribed and really worked it even when very painful; I think this helped

It’s such a sick debilitating kind of pain OP and I hope you and others with it don’t suffer too long!

JasonTindallsTan · 11/05/2026 21:27

Mine took about 2-3 years to completely clear up. Sounds silly but I had no idea it was my shoulder that was the source of the pain for a long time, I thought it was my upper arm/bicep area as that’s where I could feel it. I had the steroid injection done twice, once under ultrasound, neither helped tbh but nor did I have any side effects.

I’ve had it in both shoulders. It was awful, you have my sympathies.
in the worst one, I had hydrodilation together with manipulation under local anesthetic. It was honestly the most painful experience of my life, and I have a decent pain tolerance. But the manipulation literally cured it overnight.
the other one is about 90% cured 3 years on but I still don’t have full range of motion in it.

Don’t wait and keep having physio! Physio made mine worse and I waited 7 painful months. Ask for hydro dilatation - it’s done under guided X-ray and it took my pain away in days. The mobility took longer to come back but once the pain was gone the relief was immense. You have my sympathies, it’s a horrible injury.
