I had a porcelain crown done privately in June 2024 on the lower left, third molar in from the back, by a prosthodontist. The crown was done because a filling had come out, taking a bit of tooth with it and they said it needed a crown.
In April 2026 a lentil-sized piece of the crown cracked off.
The prosthodontist who did the crown has now retired, and a partner in the practice who has done some work for me before (so far so good) said a new crown was needed. He was vague about why the crown cracked off. He did prep and temp for a new crown. He said he had reduced the surface area of the tooth on the tongue side; I'm not sure why.
They haven't billed yet, but I saw a note on the chart for a charge that is half of their current charge for a crown.
I have other crowns done by the retired prosthodontist which have lasted upwards of 7 years, and a bridge from another practice that has lasted decades.
I don't know what to make of all this.
Any comments or observations would be very welcome. TIA.
